Olympics 2024: ?After a four-year suspenseful hiatus, the Olympics 2024 have started with great enthusiasm in Paris and everyone world over is fascinated by the display of games and the international solidarity. As always, this event brings together the best athletes in the world to compete at the highest level. How can technology then be left behind? With the ever-evolving techniques and solutions, these games exhibit how advanced simulations, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), are revolutionizing sports. The blending of sports and technology has never been so obvious before, with the improved infrastructures, augmented athlete performances including the equipment and last but not the least the clothing.?

Let us take a quick look at how simulation tools are being used to make an impact on the sports.

?Infrastructure and Equipment Design: Many simulation companies have contributed to the designing of infrastructure and the equipment.

  • Siemens STAR-CCM+: The simulation tool is used in improving the design of the Olympic venues, ensuring efficient ventilation, thermal management and structural reliability.
  • Dassault Systèmes: Using 3DEXPERIENCE platform and SIMULIA, Dassault Systèmes helps on projects that require high precision and performance, such as swimming pools and cycling velodromes. For swimming pools, they enhance water flow patterns, lane dividers, and starting blocks. In velodromes, they simulate track surfaces and cyclist dynamics.
  • Ansys: CFD solutions provided by Ansys are used to assess helmet designs, considering aerodynamics, ventilation, and impact protection. The simulation tool is also used to improve hull shapes, oar dynamics, and hydrodynamics. ANSYS tool also safeguards most favourable fabric properties and minimal drag for sprinters and cyclists.

The Clothing & Gear Design companies too are not behind when using simulation tools for enhanced performance of the athletes.
