The Simpsons, the growth mindset and the fixed mindset!

The Simpsons, the growth mindset and the fixed mindset!

A different take, but what can we learn from the beloved Simpsons on having a growth versus a fixed mindset? As a minimum, they can help us reflect in a slightly different way.

Homer Simpson first. Admittedly, I included him because he resembles in so many ways a person with a fixed mindset. Is there any hope for someone like him?

  • “Trying is the first step towards failure” Homer Simpson.
  • “You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.”
  • “I don't eat anything new unless I've eaten it before”
  • “I can’t believe it! Reading and writing actually paid off.”?
  • “All hobbies suck, but if you keep at it, you might find at the end that you’ve managed to kill some precious time.”

Lisa Simpson is wicked smart and much more mature than her age. But does she have a growth mindset or is she just very gifted? Only one quote, but what does it tell us?

  • “Does it make you feel superior to tear down people’s dreams?”

Being a classic anti-hero, I often wondered if Bart Simpson could become a great entrepreneur or corporate rebel in a larger organization?

  • “You've got the brains and the talent to go as far as you want. And when you do, I'll be right there to borrow money.”
  • “I can’t promise I’ll try, but I’ll try to try.”
  • “As God is my witness, I can pass the fourth grade.”

I guess that our Simpson characters play well into the notion that we have a hybrid mindset that is often situational. However, it also tells us that a certain mindset drives a certain behavior, right?

Any thoughts and reflections on your end? Please share, let’s learn together.
