Simplistic Innovation : A PlotTech Perspective
The danger for all of us is that we become so distracted with new innovation that we forget what really matters i.e the problem to be solved.
As I reflect on 2023 and the first full year at Plot Tech, one of the key elements that has been critical to our success has been our steadfast dedication to simplicity. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) is an acronym that dates back to the US Navy in the 1960's and in the world of product development is as true today as it ever has been.
With the groundbreaking advancements that we have seen over the past year, particularly in the likes of AI & VR, product professionals, solution designers etc could be forgiven for being largely distracted in wanting to learn and investigate the sheer opportunities that stand before us as a result of such innovation. The danger for all of us however is that we become so distracted that we forget what really matters i.e the Job to be done - the problem to be solved.
A peer of mine on LinkedIn recently posted a hot take that "no one cares if you are using AI", which as you can imagine struck up some fairly interesting debates in the comments section. But he could not be more correct. What so often happens during these periods of exciting new technological breakthroughs, is the mad dash to show how it can be applied in unique and innovative ways that excite a group of users and maybe an investor or two.
But is that really the point? To demonstrate how new technology could be used? Or is it still (and always will be) in fact about whether or not a core problem, a gap, that was previously underserved, is now being served? In the world of Product Development, getting a user from A to B in not time or cost at all, where the pain of doing so previously was so great, is how true traction is fostered. Quite frankly it does not matter whether this is achieved via the means of AI, VR or Quantum Computation, the question will always stand - "is my life/job improved as a result of this product?".
Simplicity, reduced friction, reduced complexity, speed, efficiency call it what you will, but this is the true innovation at the heart of every problem solved.

Why Simplicity Matters
- User Empowerment: True simplicity empowers users, because it means they are able to use your product wholeheartedly for the way it was intended. At PlotTech, we've embraced the philosophy that our users must feel like tech masters, not puzzle solvers. If you can use whatsapp, you can use our app.
- Faster Adoption: Disruptive tech shouldn't be disrupting. The best tech is the one that seamlessly integrates into your day to day workflow or even better, gets out of the way and is there when you need it most. Simplicity ensures faster adoption, and at PlotTech, we’ve made it our mission to simplify without sacrificing sophistication.
- Innovation Catalyst: Simple tech breeds innovation. It takes users to common ground, allowing focus on what truly matters – but then creates a platform to which boundaries in the future can be pushed, bringing your users with you as you evolve the product to bigger and better things.
- Accessible Capability: The democratisation of technology is critical for achieving real change, organisations are only as good as their worst adopter. We cannot build solutions that deliver for few to shine and for others to be left behind.
