Simplifying ..the simple metric for High Performing Team
Dear Reader, i am doped on caffeine at the moment; in my quest to build a machine learning model on portfolio analysis and optimisation. Reality check = Not a single line of code written yet since 3hrs.
Surely, a big problem in terms of capacity & capability planning. What follows next is a humoristic exploration of this holy grail'd' concept.
One of the daunting task is to teach the cat how to bark and in all fairness; this is where the famous term Velocity comes in picture.
It's the metric to guide me on how much my team can accomplish within a set period. It's not about pushing the team to their limits; it's about understanding their limits.
The faster we learn this, the better our life my dear reader.
I seldom forget my fellow peers are not mystical beings but rather mere humans who are time bound for completion of any set task. Capacity planning is the art of assessing the number of miracles my team is able to accomplish within x number of hours. Velocity and Capacity planning work hand in hand.
Next beast to tackle is the capability planning. Because the wind of tech world is as predictable as our famous weather forecast buddy; overnight i feel the dopamine in transforming a banking ninja into a telco warrior. What helps me in achieving such feat is having a skills matrix in place which empowers each team member to embrace a nice learning curve. And i affirm this needs to be the KEY!; and nothing else.
It's a wild and adventurous ride and patience is utterly required in this dear reader.
The buzz-kick in really managing a high performing team is the ability to deal with the personality quirks of each and everybody; but with a decent appetite of foresightedness, diplomacy and fun.
My dose of self realization in this whole game plan is to remind all that these are just metrics helping us to achieve our set targets or deadlines. They are merely means to an end; not the end itself.
And I end by reminding you to rather move the food than herding the cats :)
