About This Book

Hey there! Thanks for picking up this book. I wanted to give you a bit of background on why I decided to write it. You see, I believe that success in both Business and Life requires a commitment to Lifelong Learning. Short, targeted training and motivational stories can help keep that learning process engaging and effective.

A Bit About My Background

I guess you could say business is in my blood. My great-grandfather, Henry Anthony Nathan, was quite the entrepreneur. According to family lore, he came from Ireland to London in the early 1800s, changing his name due to religious persecution of Catholics—how Irish is that? He eventually made his way to New Zealand in 1841 as a goldsmith. Over his lifetime, he wore many hats: police sergeant, timber miller, farmer, councillor and mayor, hotel owner, and financier. His children also became successful businesspeople.?

My father followed suit, serving as a major in the NZ Army and later qualifying as an accountant.

My Journey

As for me, my learning journey has been quite diverse. I’ve been a Chartered Accountant, a Senior Sales Representative, and the creator and operator of various businesses. These include an accounting practice, an employment agency, a licensed restaurant, a copy centre, a commercial stationery business, life insurance sales, software design and support, wholesale and retail butchery, publishing, a taxation franchise, lingerie manufacturing and sales, a finance company, and even a business apartments/motel and café. While my base qualification is in accounting, my true passion lies in sales and the Business of Business.

A Turning Point

The whole world changed for me when I switched from an accountancy job to a senior sales representative role at Burroughs Ltd. This shift meant my income was solely dependent on sales—feast or famine. The sales training I received was excellent and set me up for future success.?

Daily interactions with business people needing solutions broadened my outlook on business and methods.

I eventually started my chartered accountancy firm and designed my first software product, Cashbook Plus.?

For about $50, I completed work that would have cost thousands of dollars in accounting fees. Realising my preference for selling, I closed the accountancy practice and designed a Windows-based payroll package. The Comacc payroll, being a Windows product, had about a five-year lead on the market. This success was bolstered by using accountancy firms as sales and installation agents and building strong, accountable teams. Comacc, the Payroll People, was eventually sold to MYOB.
