Simplify Prioritization with the WSJF Calculator – How to Prioritize Features & Stories

When it comes to project management, probably every team has a list of things that they need to get done to achieve their goals. And if you’re working in IT, you most probably know about all the Features you’re planning to release, but they’re still in the backlog and waiting to be developed.

After all, the success of companies depends on doing the right things at the right time. It wouldn’t bring you much if you came out with some small and specific features first before covering the basics.

But how do you decide which task or feature has a higher priority on your list? This is where the Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF) technique comes into play.

?

What is WSJF?

The Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF) method is used in agile project management for deciding which tasks to focus on, which will generate the highest value in the shortest time. ??

Once you have a list of things that need to be done, you must consider many factors like value, time criticality and job size, for example.

With the WSJF method, once you have clarity on all those factors, prioritization becomes a child’s play.

?

Why use the WSJF technique?

Prioritization is a difficult task both practically and mentally.

Because, above all, prioritization means?deciding NOT to do something (now). This immediately awakens fears of loss and doubt. ??

The WSJF method takes out the subjective factor (someone single-handedly deciding what to do first). It puts everything into numbers, making it more objective and, therefore, much easier to accept and implement.

?

How to use the WSJF Calculator

You can try calculating everything yourself, using the WSJF formula:

WSJF Index = CoD*/Job Size?

*CoD = Business Value + Time Criticality + Risk Reduction/OE

Or you can use a WSJF calculator which has been already configured to make the whole process so much easier for you.?

scagile's built-in WSJF calculator

scagile recently launched its built-in WSJF calculator, which allows you to prioritize and plan everything in the same place. Our formula takes into account all necessary factors and it uses the Fibonacci sequence, which is also used for estimating Story Points and Job Size.

It’s extremely easy to use and it makes prioritization easier than ever. But don’t take our word for it – try it for yourself!
