“Make It Simple, But Significant” - Don Draper ??
This to me is the absolute definition of anything successful! A video, a blog, a website, a sales pitch that rolls off the tongue and says everything in a couple of short sentences! Please don’t confuse making something simple with that being a simple thing to do.
It’s quite the opposite!
To add to this I’m adding a quote that is another favourite of mine: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough” - Albert Einstein.
In order to fully understand something to the point of being able to explain it simply, but completely, you must know the subject matter you are speaking about! The same can be applied to the creative and design process.
There is a period of discovery and learning required, to take in the depth of the subject matter you work with. Allow yourself to discover and learn. There may be days when you are not necessarily taking physical action and running around like a headless chicken ‘being busy’ but rather, days where you are sharpening that amazing tool of yours, your brain. You have to allow yourself that time to not only understand your ‘what’ but more importantly your ‘why’.
I sell social media strategy services, great! So do a million other people but ‘Why’ do I sell social media services? That answer for me is simple;
“I love to enable clients to reach the heart as well as the mind, designing and creating physical and digital experiences that deliver beyond expectations of great performance and revenue. I help them build for the long term, creating connections that people want to feel with them time and time again”
If you can’t explain that ‘why’ simply in 10-15 seconds maybe you need more of those discovery and learning days! The inner workings of simple are actually pretty complex. It requires you to look deeply, think, learn and explore in order to “Make It Simple, But Significant”outwardly.
P.S : Mad Men is just one of my favourites ever! Do yourself a favour... If you work in marketing and haven't watched it yet, grab a whiskey and start now! https://www.amc.com/shows/mad-men/season-1
