Simplicity Usually Wins...

I recently listened to a loan originator describe their process for meeting new realtors... I must admit I was shocked by the complicated steps they take.

  • Telemarketing call to set an appointment to buy them coffee
  • 30 minute coffee appointment to shake hands and meet
  • Add them to social media (3 types, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube)
  • Add them to a weekly e-mail campaign
  • Invite them to monthly lunch and learns
  • Call them every 2 weeks to check in and see if they have a client you can help
  • Send them a monthly gift
  • Offer to attend their open houses

Seems like a lot of work, and a complicated process that has both the expense of time and money tied to it. What is wrong with just calling an agent and asking for their business?

Too simple I guess, in today's world at least 7 steps are needed to do anything. But it seems to me that simple often wins. Simple phone calls, simple e-mails, simply meeting agents and chatting... do we really need a 6 page flow chart of activity just to get business.

Realtors can do an open house and likely meet a potential client. Insurance agents can simply ask people they meet if they can quote their insurance. CPAs can simply go to a business event and meet business owners who may be looking for a new accountant. None of this takes multiple steps and pages of notes to accomplish.

Sometimes football teams simply run the ball up the middle for the first down. Lots of successful bands have had huge hits with simple 3 chord songs. But sales people often buy into these complicated sales programs when often simply meeting people and shaking hands works just fine.

Even the most popular sport in the world is simple. Soccer requires a ball and a place to kick it. No pads, no bats or racquets... no wonder it is so popular. Anyone can play it almost anywhere.

So remember, before you make your life too complicated... Simplicity Usually Wins!
