the simplicity scan

the simplicity scan

Now, more than ever, people need to simplify their thinking in order to accelerate their business.

The above statement has been so motivational for me during this Corona Time! Early on in the crisis, I made a decision to make this an incredibly positive experience. Sadly, four people in our social connections have passed away due to the virus. Despite the pain and fear, or perhaps because of it, I have had an incredible motivation to move forward and accelerate.

You might have seen earlier versions of the 'Simple Business Canvas', and perhaps have used it with your business? I hope so!

Through a lot of coaching and discussions the last two months, I've made some pretty major updates to the canvas. These include:

  1. Name change - from 'Simple Business Canvas' to 'Simplicity Scan'. The biggest reason for this is a canvas represented a thing, and the benefit of the simplicity approach is the dialogue and discovery. Scan is both a noun and a verb, and it resonates much better with people. I like it because it invites motion.
  2. New styling - particularly if you saw the very early versions, this has been designed by, well, designers! What we went for was to make something which is in fact difficult a bit more easy to approach. Often people think simple is easy, and I can assure you that achieving true simplicity is a challenge! What do you think?
  3. Updated questions - the areas of the canvas have evolved over the the months, and actually over the years, and recently I updated all the questions in the template to reflect the recent learnings. There are more questions on Ebullient.com, in the 'Five Steps to Simplicity' process for different types of businesses, in case you need more.
  4. Example - as I've been working to make the process as 'do it yourself' friendly as possible, the feedback came back that an example would help. So, in full vulnerability, I've added the simplicity scan of Ebullient.com itself. Not only does this show you how a canvas could look like, but also gives you a feel for how I believe I can add value. Check it out!
  5. Five Steps - the instructions page, which used to be at the end, as been put up front and further summarised. Really keeping it to the basics. I've seen if people follow this process, which is basically answer the questions as broadly as possible and then make decisions to simplify the statements into the canvas, that breakthroughs will occur. Go for it!

Simplicity is indeed a challenge, thanks for sharing your canvas Chris Parker. Just stating a clear purpose or describing a value of products or services requires a lot of customer awareness and clarity on direction. Take care!
