Simplest Touch Sensor

Time to time I find interesting to do small projects which take only few hours not only for fun but also is a good opportunity to have first contact with new design tools, methods, ICs....

This is one of them, a really simple project, done on KiCad 7, I wanted to check how to design custom shapes on KiCad as this "circle" PCB with custom shape polygons and other features.

The PCB is 24mm round, two layers 1.6mm. PCB manufactured on JLPCB, nothing to say all were perfect, but cannot be a other way due to the simplicity of this PCB.

The base of this PCB is an IC TTP223N-BA6, with this touch sensor IC you can implement really easy a touch sensor as switch, or have it connected to an input of an MCU. In this case I used it as a stand-alone switch, the idea is to use it for a lamp. It requires only few passive external components. I am using it controlling a MOSFET in order to switch a LED strip. To power the IC I am using a simple LDO L78L05 to provide power to the IC which works in this case at 5V to reduce a bit the drop from 12V. In case you want to take the advantage of the low power consumption of this IC, there are better LDOs to be use, for my usage this characteristic is not critical.

Bottom side of the PCB with MOSFET + LDO

The idea is and was to integrate this PCB into a round custom housing which I will be working on, using Aluminum and Plastic.

Side note, in case you want to use this IC in contact with "big" metal mass as sensor, you will need to adjust the capacitor which is optional connected to the active path otherwise the IC will switch ON without touching the surface due to the increase on sensitivity using big mass of steel.

I will probably upload this small and fast project into my Github, this is one of the advantages of using KiCad for this home projects that you can release all the files without any problem.

Keep you posted for the further integration with the housing, or it is not the constant issue we have Electronic engineers leading with Mechanics in order to be able to have a nice product but at same time functional?
