The simplest of pleasures

Our dogs recently had puppies. Unplanned and unexpected, we became aware of her pregnancy only a couple of weeks before they were born. I didn't make much of it initially, but after they were born my excitement gradually grew. We kept an eye on them from a distance for the first couple of weeks, as the mom didn't want us messing around with them. But as soon as their eyes opened and they started moving around I was completely sold!

The four of them are now six weeks old and I am deeply saddened by the fact that they need to find new homes. I completely underestimated how much joy they would bring to our home. Even though our house is a mess most of the time, I don't mind. They are the best!

The purpose of sharing this story is not to show you what of a softy I am. Rather, these pups have reminded me how much genuine joy we can take from the simplest pleasures. All of us have big things we are waiting for, I'm sure of it. If this, that or the other could happen, THEN everything will be perfect - or so we think. In the meantime, while we are waiting, life continues. And passes (bloody quickly).

While many big things are up in the air, I'm trying to find joy in the small things. Like what you might ask?

Listening, with new appreciation, to music you enjoy. Noticing the fresh colours that the new season is producing all around. Enjoying a simple, tasty meal. Putting your feet up and having a lekker glass of wine or coffee with a friend or loved one you've been meaning to connect with. The Lions running riot and scoring 7 tries before half-time this past weekend. Or getting excited about an earlier sunrise and not having to put on 4 layers to go cycling in the morning.

I sincerely hope that all of the big pieces fall into place for you soon. In the meantime, join me in trying to notice and take joy in the simple things.
