‘Simpler Recycling’ is coming into effect across England from 31st March 2025. The legislation, from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), is set to change the way that businesses dispose of and separate their waste. All too often legislation can be confusing and complex. Waste bin manufacturer, Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP) has put together this guide to help venues and facilities get compliant in time.?
What do the new recycling laws in England mean?
The new rules, under Section 57 of the Environment Act 2021, will mean that every business in England with more than 10 full-time employees – including healthcare establishments and academic institutions – must separate recyclable materials, paper and card, and food waste from general waste from 31st March 2025.
The waste streams that will need to be separated, stored and presented on-site before they are collected by a waste contractor include:?
·??????? Dry recyclables (glass, metal and plastic)
·??????? Paper and card
·??????? Food waste
·??????? Residual (general) waste
·??????? Plastic film (from March 2027)
How can businesses prepare for the new legislation??
Businesses run the risk of receiving hefty fines and even civil sanctions for non-compliance, so it’s imperative that they understand their legal obligations. Compliance with the new rules should be seen as an opportunity for businesses to implement a multi-stream recycling system and reap the benefits of efficient recycling.
Start by following these steps:
1.??????? Ascertain what waste is being generated and where.
2.??????? Implement a system to capture and separate food waste.
3.??????? Ensure you have the right bins in the right places.
4.??????? Opt for bins with clear recycling signage including colour-coding and descriptive icons.
5.??????? Instill a culture of recycling, engaging staff and using free educational tools and resources.

What are the benefits of compliant, multi-stream recycling?
Aside from avoiding the fines that come with non-compliance, businesses can reap a variety of benefits.

2 天前Thanks Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene Supplies for raising awareness. The biggest challenge that we currently see is that businesses are grossly underestimating the time that it might take them to assess their requirements & find an internal "bin-frastructure" that suits their environment. Many of the people tasked with ensuring compliance to new legislation have little to no experience in waste & so it is quite the mine field for them. Luckily Rubbermaid Commercial Products Europe are on hand to help. Please each out to your BCHS account manager for more details on how we can help ??
