Simple Ways to Reduce Back-to-Work Anxiety After the Holidays
Does the thought of going back to work tomorrow already have you stressed out? You made it through the holidays but now you're having trouble enjoying your last day of vacation because the anxiety of going back is looming over your head? You're not alone.
Whether you love your job or can't stand the work that you do, going back after the holidays can be a struggle for anyone. Regardless of how long your holiday break was, chances are the season has caused you to loose momentum, and now starting up again is daunting. Going back to the office can seem as large of a struggle as picking up those weights at the gym on New Year's Day after a season full of mashed potatoes, apple pie and eggnog.
On New Year's Day many professionals spend a significant portion of their day full of anxiety about heading back into work January 2nd; their minds race with things they have to do, their hearts pound thinking about people they have to see, and their energy is depleted just thinking about all the energy it is going to take to start back up. Sound familiar?
You don't have to let your mind run wild on the back-to-work anxiety train. Take back your New Year's Day, and your sanity back with these simple steps:
- Take 15 minutes to do a brain dump and write down everything that is running through your mind that you have to do when you get back to work.
- Take 3 deep breaths, count 6 seconds inhale hold for 2 then 6 second exhale hold for 2.
- Star the 2-3 most important things on the list that actually have to get done tomorrow.
- Schedule time in your calendar to do those 2-3 things tomorrow.
- Separate out everything on the list that can actually wait until next week. Now you have 2 lists a "This Week" list and a "Next Week" list.
- Take 3 deep breaths (again), count 6 seconds inhale hold for 2 then 6 second exhale hold for 2.
- Put it on your calendar to reach to someone who makes you feel great about yourself in the morning on your way to work. (Could be your best friend, a colleague who understand you, a family member, or someone who are in a mastermind group with - for me, I love to schedule time to connect with someone from the Abundant Crew, a sales mastermind group, because I know they will light me up with positivity and purpose.)
- Put your phone away, your email really can wait until tomorrow (and so can social media).
- Do something that will bring you energy for tomorrow, self care is critical to success. (Suggestions: take a hot bath, go to the gym, meditate, listen to a relaxing audio, play with your kids or pets, clean your house, eat a nutritious meal, drink lots of water)
When you re-build momentum it's ok to start slow. You don't need to accomplish all your New Year's goals tomorrow. Remember this week is only a 3-day week! You've got this.
