Has this ever happened to you:
?You find a job that is perfect – I mean perfect – to apply to. Your background matches to a ‘T’ for what they want, you’ve got the education, experience, and industry?know-how. It’s a shoo-in. As far as the company, well, not so much, but it’s a no-brainer that you’ll get an interview.
?You’ve even perfected your resume to get through the ATS system.
?You apply and wait.
?And wait….
And wait….
And wait….
Wait a minute – what happened? Why didn’t you hear back? You’re perfect!
Is it your resume?
Sometimes as a coach, I get to be that horrible person that allows you to see things you don’t want to see. Kind of like that 360-degree mirror in a dressing room trying on a bathing suit….
You may be perfect on paper. But not in person for that team.
Let’s do a quick recap about your resume.
Its purpose is to get you an interview.
You do this through what I call the “V Formula = Your Voice + Your Value = Visibility”
This means telling the value you bring to an organization in your own voice. Making your resume sound like you. And proving your value, not listing a stat.
Did you do that? Are you in your resume? Good.
Now here comes the backside of that 360 mirror.
?They may not like you.
Wait! That's not fair! They don't even know me! How can they not like me?!
It is okay if not everyone likes you. ?
Getting a sense of you
We are influenced by the words we read and their arrangement.
I can read someone’s resume and tell if they like their job.
Someone can read your resume and get a sense of you.
Right or wrong.
Their impression may be that you aren’t a good fit for their team or company.

But remember one thing – you weren’t thrilled about the company to begin with.
Setting yourself up?
This is how you’re setting yourself up to be rejected by someone you don’t even like.
You’re trying to get a quick, feel-good win: get an interview with them then reject them. Because honestly, you didn’t want to go there in the first place. But it backfired.
Stop doing that.
Stop applying for companies or jobs that don’t feel, seem, or are a good fit for you as a person.
?That’s like marrying a person thinking that person and their entire extended family is going to change just because you two look like a good match on paper.
?It doesn’t work that way.
?A job for the right reason in the right season
If you need a position in the interim to make ends meet – go get it.
No shame in that game.
I’ve done it myself. It wasn’t a great job; it paid the bills and I knew it was temporary. I wasn’t looking for a career marriage, I just needed a date.
If you’re looking for career long-term dating or even marriage, stop asking out the people that you don’t even like.
Trust your gut.
Research the company.
Do a little incognito LinkedIn browsing of employees.
You are a person of tremendous value and talent. Stop wasting it on companies or people that don’t or won’t appreciate you.
You deserve better.
That simple way
That simple way to stop sucking the life out of your jobs search, being a glutton for punishment, and needlessly banging your head against a wall: stop applying for things that don't match up with you or your needs.
?? ?Honestly, how many times have you applied for a job that you didn’t even want, but thought it would be a quick feel-good win?
