The Simple Way to Define a Job that You Will Enjoy

Recently, I had a conversation with a career consultant. We discussed how some people find fulfilling and enjoyable work while others struggle in jobs they don't love. What intrigued me was that people often rely on external motivations in pursuing career fulfillment, neglecting internal goals and values.

Here is a list of common external motivators for choosing a job:

  • Money
  • Career status
  • Social insurance and other benefits

Some also consider motivations like the opportunity to influence or help others. Unfortunately, these motivations don't reflect the deep-seated reasons that either allow or prevent you from deriving satisfaction from your work. It's crucial to delve deeper.

To identify what makes a job appealing, choose an activity during which you experience the most desirable emotions. In my case, it's excitement, inspiration, a sense of significance, interest, and enthusiasm. Next, think about what aspects of this activity evoke these emotions. For me, these conditions include:

  • Physical and psychological well-being
  • A friendly atmosphere in the team
  • Feeling myself like a significant part of the team
  • The sense that the work I do is needed and important
  • Alignment of the job with my values
  • Challenges that stimulate my interest
  • Involvement in a global project capable of changing the industry
  • Precise requirements for the results
  • No daily schedule restrictions, but clear deadlines

Some of these points can be further elaborated. Only you decide how deep you want to go. For deeper exploration, I ask myself questions like:

  1. What are the criteria for psychological and physical well-being? (I feel energetic, lively, and empowered)
  2. How is the friendliness of the team manifested? (Horizontal management, openness, mutual support, absence of toxicity)
  3. How do I know that my work is significant for the team? (The project's development is impossible without my contribution and positive feedback from leadership)
  4. What are my fundamental values? (Not harming the consumer, honesty, creating a high-quality product, providing consumer choice without imposing products)
  5. What challenges excite me? (Significant, complex tasks that require maximum intellectual effort)
  6. What does the clarity of requirements entail? (When the work should be done, in what volume, with what characteristics, etc).

Once you detail the conditions of your favorite activity, you can more easily navigate what suits you and which offers to pass by. Share your list of criteria for activities that give pleasure!
