A Simple Way to Assess taking on New Opportunities

A Simple Way to Assess taking on New Opportunities

When you're a high performing leader, you get opportunities coming at you from different angles at high rates of speed. This is because people know that you get things done on time and that you deliver value and results. Basically, you're so good at what you do, you become a target and others want to take advantage of you. And while this, in many ways, is a compliment... it can also be a problem for you.

One of the main tenants of time management and productivity is that of Prioritizing.

Without choosing and focusing on your highest payback activities (think of the 80/20 rule - The Pareto Principle), you can easily get into a position where your bandwidth and focus get diluted and you end up doing a lot.. but doing nothing really well. You end up being busy and stressed, but not necessarily productive and the quality of your work suffers.

There's a simple filter in which to run your decision making process through. The filter to run new opportunities through is whether or not an opportunity is a HELL YES or a HELL NO. In other words, will the new opportunity emphatically move you towards your big picture goals? If so, it's a HELL YES and it gets you jazzed... and you should do it. On the other hand, if the opportunity won't move you along that path or you're not sure, it's a HELL NO and you should consider punting, delegating it or pushing it down the road for another time.

It's a simple filtering tool, but leveraging HELL YES or a HELL NO can keep you on the right path to long term success and out of the weeds.
