A simple three-step conversation that can save a life.

A simple three-step conversation that can save a life.

In the U.K 1-4 people will experience a common mental health related issue (such as Anxiety or Depression) every year.

It is more important than ever to understand what mental health is, and be able to identify the signs and symptoms of mental ill health, and to provide the correct support and guidance to those who are affected.

Suicide is also another still very much taboo subject, and it can be extremely daunting and frightening to talk about, let alone support somebody feeling suicidal.

Here are 3 actionable steps to help somebody who may feel suicidal.

Step 1: Ask if they are thinking about suicide or ending their life.

Step 2: Listen, not with intent to give a solution, just listen.

Step 3: Discuss What Needs to be done to remain safe.

The more time you give a person, the more chance they have of not seeing their plans through.

Step 1: Recognise + Ask.

Be aware of possible signs: what to look and listen out for.

Tell them what you’ve noticed, your reasons for being concerned, ask if they are thinking about suicide

Safety check: ask yourself:

1: Are we both safe right now?

2: is the person able to continue this conversation?

If not get appropriate help, if yes continue

Step 2: Listen + Explore

Show you care about taking time to listen and learn about what is causing the pain.

Resist the urge to give solutions.

Let them know you’ve heard what they said.

Give them a chance to explore the options and talk things through.

Help them understand that now may not be the best time to make a major decision.

Step 3:

Safeguarding.

Discuss what they need to stay safe now - help to protect them against any threats to their safety.

Build on the strengths and identify who else can support them.

Ask them to repeat back (and maybe write down) what do you have both agreed will happen next.

Suicide is one of the most preventable causes of death, and we can all play our part in helping to support a person who may be thinking of taking their life by suicide.

Suicide prevention is everybody's business.
