Simple, light and fresh.

This was a bowl of food that I will always remember. Freshly hauled squid in a light broth of mee suah (thin rice noodles) and vegetables. It was the simplest of taste. The broth was sweet, the squid was tender, the cabbage and carrots had a little crunch and the noodles gave it body. Body for the soul.
We had other more elaborate dishes that were nice. This bowl was different. It was simple, almost elegant.
It made me wish, life was like that - simple, light and fresh. Simple because our life is a life counting down the seconds and hours and there is so much to get done. Light because we must tread lightly on this earthly home. Fresh because we must face each new day with energy and hope.
How then can we achieve these three things?
Be doing what is necessary and good. Someone mentioned "the path of least resistance" to me recently. Yes, the shortest distance between two points is the path of least resistance.
By taking only what we need. Why do we use 10 ingredients when all it takes is 5? Less is indeed more when you take a sip of this broth and wonder - can simple taste so good?
And by letting go of the past; stop dwelling on old matters. And let each day be greeted with new thoughts.
While I may not make my way back to this delightful fishing port. I will not forget this dish.
Simple gets remembered too.
