Simple Leadership Test

Having had the privilege of working with numerous organisations across a huge diverse range of businesses the amount of commonalities still surprises me. I think this comes in light of the contrasting, but equally consistent, mindest that “we are different”. Leaders in all teams are responsible for ensuring people know what is required of them, where they fit in the team and how the team works together. This being clearly defined, a leader should be able to get out the way and let people do what they are there to do.
This week’s Learning BITES looks at the ‘simple’ question – “What are you employed to achieve?”
Are you and your team clear on their role requirements an success criteria?
If you came to work and did nothing else but 3-5 core things what would they be? What about for any people reporting to you – would they know? In an oft touted statistic people waste 40%+ of their day on distractions, procrastinations, interruptions and doing work they need not do – this happens when what we NEED to do is not clear.
Possibly the greatest cost comes in the insidious breakdown of an engaged team culture. As people are not clear, they allow tasks to fill time available, get involved in non-core tasks, and lack clear accountability of outcomes, all the while resentment builds as other team members do not deliver as we perceive they should.
People need to know they matter.
Engaging people means showing them that they matter and that they make a positive difference.
Run the “3-5 core tasks” test through your team today and ensure your team is clear on their contribution. Team engagement is not an accident – it requires work, dedication, vision, clarity, action and leadership.
Do get in touch if you would like to know more on team engagement and creating positive team culture that gets people thinking right, working right and working together towards right results.

9 年Fantastic and pithy article Mike Clark. Thanks for sharing. Very much reminds me of a story about a sales executive who had a great meeting with their manager. During a one-on-one session he tabled that his opinion was that he was not producing the results he should be, and it was getting him down. He mentioned that in looking deeper he discovered this was at least in part due to some areas of his role that took up more time than the manager would perhaps expect. His manager asked him to tell me about these tasks. When tabled he realized they were all valid tasks that needed to be carried out, but there was no need for him to do them and they weren't important in his role. His manager encouraged him to delegate tasks to the admin team, operations, and whoever the task applied free his time up for the core parts of his role. Through COMMUNICATION he was able to overcome the distractions in his day and align himself with what success really meant in his role
