A simple framework for creating MAGIC in the world

This is part of a NEW "LinkedIn-Only" series where Joey and Sally meet every morning at a coffee shop to share professional, personal, or life ideas with each other for exactly 2 minutes.

Who's Joey and Sally?

Sally is an uber-smart, slightly pessimistic, upcoming leader, who is always loaded with great questions and ideas. Joey is Sally's mentor, optimistic and witty busy leader who always has some wisdom to share.

Here's their conversation in exactly 2 minutes as they get their hot coffee!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sally: Happy new year!! Over the holidays, a question popped into my head. Am I growing in my job and life? Do you ever feel that way?

Joey: Happy new year, Sally! This is really an important question that I wish more people will seek to answer. You know, Napeloan Hill said this:

There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge. Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought.

Sally: So it's all a mind game?

Joey: I would say it's all about your mindset. Here’s the thing. The brain can actually grow and become stronger because it’s plastic.

Sally: Plastic brain? Does that mean I can train my brain to stretch and grow?

Joey: Exactly! With practice, it can develop new cells and strengthen neurologic pathways. That means instead of believing that you can’t do something, you’ll develop new talents and abilities through effort and learning from your mistakes and successes.

It's all depends upon the type of mindset you have.

Sally: Wait a minute. Are there different types of mindset?

Joey: That's the fun part. Carol Dweck who pioneered research in why people succeed has explained in her best-selling books, that there are two types of mindsets:

The first is a fixed mindset. It’s almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you tell yourself that you can’t finish that race or your business is going to fail, then guess what? Those thoughts become reality. This view is more of an "I am stuck" mentality.

The second is a growth mindset. this is when people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view is more of an "I am a learner" mentality.

In fact, one study among 10th graders found that those who adopted a growth mindset were three times more likely to score in the top 20% on tests.

Sally: Got it but how do I make it part of my daily routine so I don't feel stuck?

Joey: Well, it’s not going to happen overnight. But, I think this MAGIC framework could help. It’s simply an acronym for:

  • Mindset is about belief (Take the time to imagine and write down what you truly believe)
  • Act not just watch (do the work to live up to your aspirations)
  • Get a mentor (you got me :) but seriously, someone who can push you forward)
  • Invest in yourself (read/exercise - learning is a daily activity)
  • Create time to reflect (Self-audit every week or month to see how you are tracking)

Sally: I can use a little MAGIC in 2020 to grow professionally and personally.

Joey: Yep, We all can so let's go create some MAGIC in the world. The world definitely can use more of it.

P.S. Got more than a minute?

Joey: To dig deeper into this topic, maybe watch this amazing TED talk by Carol Dwek on the POWER of believing that you can improve which has over 10 million views.

LeaderPoint: Your mindset can make or break you.

Question: How you practice having a growth mindset?
