The Simple Career Mistake That Keeps Women Playing Small

I speak with a lot of women who are stopping short of "having it all"…
These women are ambitious, successful, & highly regarded by their companies
Yet, they are paying a huge personal price by playing it small in their career.
I used to be one of them.
And the career mistake that prevents women from living beautiful lives of freedom, fulfillment and financial success is self-doubt.
Let me ask you...
- Do you ever feel like you want the next level at work, but you’re already working so hard you have no idea how you would ever manage it?
- Have you ever been passed over for a promotion…or watched others be recognized for your efforts…and wondered why?
- Are you frustrated that the only choices in front of you are either to work hard and sacrifice your personal happiness or slow down and sacrifice your career?
Hidden within those struggles is self-doubt. These beliefs are simply stories you’ve adopted to protect you in childhood.
And these stories are so intrinsic to you it’s nearly impossible to see answers to what are simple problems
Do any of these statements sound familiar?
“If I get promoted or change jobs I’ll have to spend xx amount of time proving myself...”
“If my team doesn't deliver, I have to step in and get it done because ultimately I’m responsible for our success”
“I’m the only one on the team with a flex schedule so I have to reassure everyone I’m doing my job by being responsive whenever they need me”
Are you exhausted just reading this?
And here is the bigger problem…
Self-doubt overrides logic and common sense
This is why leadership training only gets you so far.
Typical leadership training – even from top institutes – focus on strategy and fail to help rewire your inner psychology.
And if you don't change your mental game even the best strategy won’t work for long
- Ten years into your career you no longer have to prove yourself.
- Accepting a promotion or new role does not mean you need to prove that you deserve it or stay late “getting up to speed”
- The fact you are now a mother and require a more flexible schedule does not mean you need to prove anything
Sound too good to be true?
Women are riddled with self-doubt and constantly trying to prove we deserve a seat at the table. Our culture has told us we can have a seat at the table and that we should lean in and go for it.
Yet, no one tells us how to powerfully disconnect and stop worrying about work when we're home playing with the littles. Women don't understand how to stop working hard and instead leverage our value. And we are never taught to balance our own needs so that we can show up as the best wife, the best mom, and the best executive we can be without burnout and self-sacrifice.
And this is why so many women step back at the height of their careers believing they cannot have a successful career without sacrificing their personal life and happiness.
Look... highly successful women who enjoy fulfilling personal lives aren’t immune to self-doubt or fear. They simply understand how to recognize these in themselves and quickly overcome fear in order to make the decisions that allow them to live in freedom.
It's time we change the paradigm for what's possible for women. Women can have it all.
So what about you? Are you squelching that inner voice that wants more from your own life? How much longer are you willing to wait to live the life you want?
I will say it's not easy, so if you want an easy, convenient answer don't bother. It's tough to rewire age-old habits and invest in change. Yet, it such an empowering place to live when your mental game is aligned with the life you truly want. Ahhh, now that's success!
Here's to redefining what's possible for high-achieving women with powerful careers.
Corporate Women Unleashed (CWU) teaches female executives and high-achieving women how to take control of your career and start enjoying the life you've worked so hard to create.

Don't you think that applies to a lot of men as well? ?I am not so sure it is a female/male thing.

6 年Yes! I just recently recognized all the self-doubt that was holding me back. Wow has it made a world of difference to acknowledge it, know my value, and now welcome challenges without fear of failure (because I learn and move forward stronger from each mistake) Great perspective, Kathleen- thank you for reminding us all we are worthy and capable and competent as we pursue our passions and joys and freedoms.

6 年Well articulated Kathleen! I am sure this resonates with many women out there. Your article is spot on in talking about these challenges which women face today yet are unable to address them. Thanks for sharing.

6 年A close cousin of this mistake is continuing to work for a boss who reinforces that a woman should "play small."? ?I once supervised a woman who asked me if it was "ok to be honest" about her career goals, because her previous boss told her to "keep it to yourself."? ?2018 going on 1958 in still too many places - particularly out here in Asia!
