I was talking to a friend recently. At one point, I heard myself saying something that I have always believed in, in fact stretching from the period I was a novice trainer myself, "If I can't explain a concept in simple words to someone else, it means I don't have a firm grasp on the concept itself" ring so true to until this very day. However, this wasn't always an easy thing to grasp, which had led me to experiment with the idea and in the process, I turned it into a habitual process for me.
Following the same thought, I am going to simplify the decision-making process for all of you, today ??
In this day and age, we deal with uncertainty on a daily basis. Uncertainty is the watchword of today's life, you may be experiencing this yourself. No wonder, uncertainty leads to dilemmas and complicated situations and these situations weigh us down and inundate us in a zone with very little solutions to cling onto.
As leaders, as parents, as graduating students, while transitioning between careers etc, we do feel ourselves at those crossroads and we find everything so complex.
If you see some problems for which you are holding back the decisions, keep reading and even if you can’t think of any such issue or dilemma right now, still read ahead because life does bring us at crossroads.
As a coach, I use a multitude of methods to help my clients to reflect and attain clarity in life. Having this clarity of thought put them on a clear path of action.
Though I won’t be able to unveil the complete process, nevertheless I can still share a simple yet powerful decision-making tool which anyone can leverage and generate the way forward.
So, here I am, simplifying yet another complex thing ??
First and foremost.…
Define the decision you want to make or define the question clearly for which you need an answer for
Then go ahead and ask yourself the following questions in the same sequence to gauge the lay of land:
Q1. What will happen if I do this?
The answer to this question brings in clarity by making us realize what else could happen if you go ahead with your decision and can act as a motivating factor to take action
Q2. What will happen if I don’t do this?
It helps us reflect on the pain points and help us understand what pain is driving us to bring the change and this can act as a catalyst for the change
Q3. What won’t happen if I do this?
The answer to this question would help us understand the potential loss if we go ahead with the decision
Q4. What won’t happen if I don’t do this?
This will unearth any hidden agendas if one has, at the back of the mind and logic gets superseded by intuitiveness by bringing a fresh perspective
While using this technique, I strongly recommend to pen the answers down and once you are done with the exercise, see what resonates with you because, by the tail end of the exercise, you would have thought way beyond your left brain ability and must have generated, almost a clear perspective about going ahead or holding back…..
Keep these questions in your presence always and next time when you are toying with an idea or at crossroads just emulate this simple process
