After being personally trained by our mentor, coach and manager in HR and Admin Dept. on how to handle people, I started to read books and articles about leadership and people management. What do I get from reading? We'll I get new ideas and additional knowledge and books enhances my mind. Like other people, sometimes I get to much excited in applying what I have learned. However, a lot of situations in the workplace are more complicated compared to the ideas presented in books or articles.
What I did to put things in order, I have made some research on how to be effective in handling people. I have used some documents and reports from the HR that involve people's performance & behavior as reference and I validated it with actual people-engagement experience. After all the research and study, I found these simple actions to be meaningful and useful;
A simple greeting
- greeting one another is very common in the workplace. In fact, all of us have been doing this at work everyday with our simple "good morning" to colleagues. Greeting as an act of communication becomes a part of everybody's daily routine at work. Leaders are using it to formally start discussions during team meetings but for the majority, it is a common practice of showing respect. In big companies, majority of their employees are rank and files. These employees greatly value respect. They respect their superior as their leaders that is why they always have time to great him. It is so inspiring to be respected or our presence to be acknowledged. Therefore, leaders should give their utmost response when greeted by people and it even feels more inspiring to people when superiors are the one greeting them.
A simple concern
- I tell you leaders, if you were able to inspire people by greeting them, you should also make them feel they are part of the team; a family member. A simple "how are you" can change people's interpretation of being an employee, being a team member rather than just a follower. Leaders that show concern are the most effective leaders in handling people. It has a ripple effect. It builds people to show concern to their leaders, the completion of their tasks, their relationship to others and even shows concern to their employers. It has an impact we could never imagine but very possible to happen.
A simple appreciation
- In the workplace "People's accomplishment is Leaders' accomplishment". It is very necessary to appreciate his people's effort when tasks are accomplishment. A simple "good job" means much to them because their efforts are recognized. A simple "thank you" shows gratitude for what have they accomplished. Basically, a team effort give positive results but when leaders are recognizing it, team effort provides greater success. When leaders appreciate people's contributions at work, it boost their confidence. Productivity increases as people love to see themselves being part of organization's success.
A simple encouragement
- I don't know if our experiences are the same when personal relationship to people is concerned, but there were times people have shared to me their problems. People these people were asking my advice when in doubts and they need my help. I just can't recall helping them about money since me too needs a helping hand. Ha!ha!ha!. Anyways, as a leader, I am always available to give my advice. I know it will not cost me but it will matter to them. Phrases like "everything will be alright" or "you can do it" can uplift a person who has a doubtful mind, a lonely soul and a lonely heart. It is one of the responsibilities of a leader to give the rightful amount of care, love and inspiration to his people because it is essential for the whole process in achieving goals.
