Similarities Between Parenthood and Management

Similarities Between Parenthood and Management

My baby bird has flown the coop! I can’t believe I have a son in college. We drove out the 10+ hours, moved him in, stuck around for orientation, and flew home.?

I am a mess and reflecting a lot! I have long written about the similarities between motherhood (parenthood) and management.?

When listening?to?the book?Grit, I learned that the word?parenting?is actually derived from Latin and means?to bring forth.?

I?am bringing him forth into the world. Leaders bring forth their people to execute, impact, and achieve.?

I started delegating much more over the last year.?I monitored and built his confidence while trying not to micromanage.?

The author explains that you are acting in a parent-like manner if you are seeking to bring forth interest, purpose, passion, and hope in those that you care for.?

I listened to?this, and I thought, I sure hope I have done that. I also thought what she is describing is the epitome of a Connected Leader. Connecting and caring about those that you are leading. Showing they are not just interested but invested in the success of those they are bringing forward, whether it's to an opportunity, a promotion, or a new skill.?

Bringing your parenting skills into the workplace and vice versa makes so much sense to me. Yet, the world wants us to separate the aspects of our lives.?How do you think you can translate your skills in one environment to other aspects of your life??

One thing to keep in mind in both worlds…

  • Good behavior gone unnoticed, decreases
  • Bad behavior gone unnoticed, increases?

There is a correlation between the speed with which you give?feedback, and the importance placed on that feedback. Consistency is king and builds trust.??

Whether you are a parent bringing forward children or if you are growing a team, think about transferring some of the knowledge, skills, and habits gained in one area to other environments.?

Parenting is a role that requires constant learning, growth and adapting to change. It's the most extreme test of one's abilities and capabilities to inspire, coach and help others grow, a great opportunity to lead with empathy and compassion, creating psicological safety and trust to unleash human potential. A role with few rivals that can enrich our leadership and vice versa. ??

Absolutely see the connection between parenting and leadership! Both require balancing empathy with clear boundaries. Like with my daughter... addressing emotions first, then guiding towards solutions, works wonders. Whether at home or in the workplace, the key is to pause, reflect, and shift from reaction to resolution. Consistency and understanding build trust and foster growth in both environments.
