The Silver Tsunami - Boomers Building Businesses for Boys (and girls) to Buy
If you're like me, you're just hearing about this; or maybe I'm just late to the party. Idk. From my understanding though, the silver tsunami is actually a term used to describe the aging of the baby boomer generation. Sidebar, these are my favorite people and they're born between the years 1946 and 1964. They're getting up there in age, and as they do, they're creating a whole lotta ripples in our society.
I mean, think about it. Boomers are retiring left and right, leaving their jobs and vacating their positions in the workforce and who's gonna fill those positions? The young people ??. In addition to them leaving their jobs, they're also looking to sell their BUSINESSES. Insurance company doing 4 million in gross revenue and the owner's son doesn't want to take it over. A restaurant owner with no children and 3 profitable locations hasn't really built a tasty morsel for private equity. This creates a huge opportunity for young people to buy these businesses.
Boomers make up 20% of the US population and have almost 30% of the dinero - the most wealth ever held by an older generation in modern history. It's estimated that boomers currently command about $60 trillion in collective worth and here's the thing, a large portion of that is wrapped up in small and mid-sized businesses. Now, the majority of this will be passed down via inheritance to millennials and that's cool. Get that that daddy's money bro. But there is a huge opportunity on the horizon for young people. Many of these businesses will be hitting the market for sale soon and I want you to buy them.

There's a lovely book called HBR Guide to Buying a Small Business that outlines this process in a really thoughtful way. But as you're graduating school, starting that very cool new yoga app, or working on climbing the corporate ladder, think about picking up this book and exploring what can be done with an SBA Loan or other types of financing. Think about all of the businesses you see driving to and from work. One of these could be yours because chances are, it's owned by someone looking to retire soon.
The silver tsunami is already in full swing. Subscribe to a deal flow newsletter or reach out to a business broker and start working on your next move. Don't try to jip the boomers though. They're smart.
I'm trying to write more. I have a lot of thoughts on business and technology and my wife doesn't want to hear them anymore so I'm gonna lay them out here each week.

1 年Just finished reading all of your article. But not everyone is retiring, for instance like me. But I’m 73 and plan on retiring and dying on the same day! ?? So, what old people like me are doing is looking for someone to bring in to participate in our growth and share the benefits. Someone just like you when and I’d you and your partners execute your “Exit Plan”.
