2020 is a "BAD YEAR". Let's fast-forward to 2021
This is one of the common phrases which uttered by many individuals on social media as well in their day-to-day conversations. But, my view of 2020 is entirely different.
Yes! this year was a disaster due to the pandemic. Economies were severely impacted, salaries and jobs were cut but however, this year itself showed different and positive paths for individuals as well as for corporates.
As an individual, I’ve started to focus on many things and managed to accomplish some of my goals which I was planning to complete within this year. While I was working from home I invested my time to complete my postgraduate studies with flying colors, started online courses on Google, Harvard, the University of Maryland, and the University of California, Berkeley.
One of the best things was I was procrastinating about starting to work out to stay fit and healthy. Thanks to this pandemic homestay period I’ve met Ruchira who is a personal trainer who conducts online courses. With his inspiration and guidance, I focused on my health and managed to hit the gym after postponing that decision for more than three years.
As mentioned at the beginning of this article this year wasn’t a bad year. It was an eye-opener for everyone. Individuals invested time in their education and some have managed to find lost time to spend time with their loved ones.
From the corporate aspect in Sri Lanka, the online business started to flourish during the lockdown. SMEs took the lead to run online businesses and individuals started new businesses to survive from job losses, government-initiated mobile payment platforms such as LankaQR to transform the country to become a cashless society.
Businesses started to look at new business models on how to function during such dynamic, challenging environments which proves that organizations need to have agile processes to adopt to certain economic conditions from time to time.
People also started to be cautious about their health and wellbeing in 2020 which most of us have neglected over the years. Starting with good health practices to dining habits the year itself has shown many positive aspects to drive people’s lives to add vitality.
As the ending note, this year wasn’t a bad year but it was a tough year. Let’s hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon and the coming year will be a great year for all of us.
Looking forward to 2021!!

4 年Congratulations first of all for your achievements Chathuranga. While there is a whole quarter left for 2020, what I understood from your article is that not the year is bad but the way we utilize the time. Let me add some more positives, we had a trade surplus for the first time after about a half century. And many other business opportunities while managing pandemic early than other countries. Also 2020 gave a good inspiration for sri Lankans on self sufficient Sri Lanka. Good topic good discussion Chathuranga ????
