Silver or bronze?
“Nobody can teach you how to lead; you need to be willing and able to learn how to lead,” says Linda Hill, Harvard Business School professor and one of the world’s top experts in leadership.?
Hill states that people learn mostly from their experiences, and that stepping outside of our safety zones, trying things we’ve never done before, and risking failure, are all necessary requirements in developing as a leader.?
The problem is, too many leaders just stay in their small area of expertise. They have some success and maybe even create a job that sustains them intellectually and financially.?
However, if you ever want to pass your business down to an heir or sell it for your retirement nest, you’d better put yourself in rooms with people ahead of you.?
Like most of America, I watched the Olympic Games this weekend and I was so excited to see the fastest men in the world. While everyone loves Noah Lyles, I am a Frank Kerley fan. I wanted to see him on the podium.?
As the lane assignments were announced, I was thrilled to see him in the lane next to Kishane Thompson of Jamaica.?
You see, I used to be a sprinter myself, and being in the lane next to someone bigger, stronger, and faster made me run harder. I always had my best times racing against the people I feared the most.?
What does this have to do with leadership??
You have to race the big dogs.?
You won’t learn by staying in the same, comfortable rooms.?
