As you navigate the South African roads this season, keep these 10 Road Safety Tips in mind for safe travelling and a safe return.

1. Check that your vehicle is roadworthy before you leave. Check your tyre pressure (including the spare). Is your licence disk up to date? Are all your indicators and lights working??Test your hooter and windscreen wipers (front and back)..
2. Ensure you have all the necessities to get you to your destination, like fuel and toll-gate money. Remember, you're delivering a very important package to the people waiting for you on the other side.
3. Plan the route you want to take beforehand. Make a note of suitable places to stop for refreshments, refuelling, or in case of an emergency.
4. Please ensure that everyone in the vehicle (front and back) is wearing their seatbelt.?This is the oldest rule in the driving book because it has proven to be a lifesaver!
5. Obey the speed limit and rules of the road, not only for your safety but also for other road users.
6. You can keep your belongings away from external eyes, preferably in the boot or underneath car seats.?It's better to be safe than sorry.
7. Drink or drive. If you are doing one, don't do the other. Drunk driving is a criminal offence; instead, use a safe taxi service..
8. Consider which days and times are best to travel on the road. Avoid driving on public holidays — the more cars on the roads, the less time spent with loved ones.
9. If possible, drive with a travel partner. It's better to travel far with someone than to travel far alone.
10. The quantity of your sleep (at least 7 hours before you drive) is just as important as the quality of your driving. And, while you're on the road, take a breather every two hours or 200 km to stretch your legs and refresh.
