Nexperia has announced a strategic partnership with Kyocera AVX Components (Salzburg, Austria) as a significant step toward augmenting the capabilities of power electronics. The collaboration seeks to produce a cutting-edge 650-V, 20-A silicon carbide rectifier module customized for 3-kW to 11-kW high-frequency power applications. These applications include industrial power supplies, charging terminals for electric vehicles and on-board adapters. Nexperia expects samples of the new SiC rectifier modules to be available in the first quarter of 2024. Power Electronics News spoke with Pradip Chatterjee, senior principal product application engineer at Nexperia, and Martin Knosp, Product Line Director for Power Modules at Kyocera AVX Salzburg.

Chatterjee said that isolated unidirectional DC/DC converters are the typical topologies to which this kind of bridge rectifier can be a great contributor. “LLC resonant-type converters or phase-shifted full-bridge–type converters designed for 400-V output systems can get the full advantages of increased power density, higher efficiency and weight reduction. On-board chargers and off-board chargers use these topologies for 400-V battery-based systems, or they can be used as a cascaded version for 800-V battery-based systems.”

Moreover, a strategic partnership has been established between Nexperia and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for the collaborative development of SiC MOSFETs, the companies announced. In response to the escalating need for high efficiency discrete power semiconductors and to enhance the energy efficiency and performance of SiC wide bandgap semiconductors, this partnership will unite Nexperia and Mitsubishi Electric, both of which are market leaders in their respective fields.

Synthetic and biofuels could be an interim solution to keep using ICE technologies in preparation for massive electrification

By Filippo Di Giovanni

Environmental issues such as poor air quality in densely populated cities loom over communities and affect the way humans live, work, and spend leisure time outdoors. An explosion of car ownership is far from weakening, especially in developing countries. To curb pollution that is responsible for many premature deaths and health problems, electric vehicles (EVs) represent a viable solution. Governments have set ambitious targets to discontinue Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles by 2035. Is the automotive industry ready to support a gigantic and radical switchover to battery-operated cars and trucks?

Using Machine Learning to Predict Laminated Busbar Parasitic Parameters

By Stefano Lovati

To accomplish high-speed switching operations in power-converter designs, silicon carbide and gallium nitride power devices have been introduced as an alternative to conventional silicon-based components. However, the stray inductance generated by the busbar geometries between DC capacitors and power devices influences high-speed switching circuits, including surge voltages and switching losses. In designing power-converter circuits, therefore, the evaluation of parasitic parameters is essentia...

Will Darwinian Evolution allow Ultra-Wide Bandgap (UWBG) Semiconductors to displace current Wide Bandgap (WBG) materials?

By Filippo Di Giovanni

In the last years, semiconductor products such as GaAs (gallium arsenide) and more recently, wide band gap materials such as SiC (silicon carbide) and GaN (gallium nitride), have replaced Silicon in a large variety of applications. They include, among others, LEDs, RF, and power components. The latter are accelerating e-mobility and enabling large-scale deployment of electric vehicles (EVs). Ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors, with bandgap energies well above those of GaN (3.4 eV) and SiC (3.2 eV) represent a new frontier in semiconductor materials promising to improve the overall features of WBG even further. Distinctive characteristics include higher tolerance to elevated temperatures and better power ratings in addition to unique optical properties exhibited by some of them.?
