Silent Strength: Triumph Over Adversity
What does it mean to be strong? Is it about physical power, or something deeper? Is it possible to see strength? Not the physical kind. But the mental power or endurance. Today, I want to share stories about the quiet, unwavering strength of women.
Three years ago, I started working with a Contract Research Organization (CRO) based in India, and during my initial visit, I couldn't help but notice the limited presence of women at the site. Having a close relationship with the CEO, a passionate scientist with a genuine desire to foster diversity, I became aware of his commitment to cultivating a more inclusive work environment
The Farmer's Daughter: The first woman embodies the essence of silent strength. She comes from a humble farming background, where she learned the values of hard work and perseverance. She faced the challenge of balancing agricultural responsibilities
The Dedicated Mother: The second woman is a devoted mother who took a bold step for the sake of her child's future. Living in a village 2.5 hours away from her workplace, she decided to leave her child in the care of her parents while she pursued a career in the pharmaceutical industry. Every weekend, she travels back to her village to spend precious moments with her child, demonstrating the sacrifices mothers make for the well-being of their families. Her passion for her work drives her to overcome geographical distances and societal expectations, showcasing the extraordinary lengths women go to for their chosen professions. Her pride is evident in the sacrifices made to provide a better future for her family.
The Education Warrior: In a society where gender norms often dictate women's destinies, our third woman defied societal expectations. Her mother, a fierce advocate for her daughter's education, fought against prevailing customs that sought to marry her off early. Despite facing immense pressure, they stood firm and prioritized education. Today, this woman stands as a symbol of empowerment, breaking stereotypes

Escaping the Chains: The fourth woman faced a different form of adversity – economic hardship within her family. She was made to quit school at the age of 10 because her father considered her more useful working on the fields and earning money for his liquor consumption. Her mother escaped with her daughter so she could provide her with a better future. Her mother, too, battled against prevailing customs to secure her daughter's right to learning. As she emerged as the top student in her graduating class, her pride is not just personal but a celebration of breaking barriers. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the obstacles many women encounter within many parts of the world still today.
These women, despite facing challenges and societal pressures, embrace their roles with pride and a sense of duty. They find strength in their contributions. These women speak with pride about their accomplishments, considering their work not merely a job but a duty they fulfill with unwavering dedication. Even in the face of lower pay and prevailing stereotypes, their silent strength propels them forward, reshaping the narrative around women in the sciences.
My grandmother and mother never had the chance to walk across a graduation stage, but their sacrifices paved the way for me. They didn't fight for their own dreams, but for the dreams of their daughters. And that, I believe, is the true essence of strength, the quiet revolution that happens within families, passed down through generations. Their strength wasn't about grand gestures, but quiet resilience.
As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us applaud the silent strength of these proud women. Their stories inspire us to redefine success, emphasizing the pride that comes not just from personal achievements but from fulfilling duties with unwavering dedication. May their silent strength continue to shape a more inclusive and empowering future for women in the workforce.
