The silent pandemic - "Temporal dissonance"
Temporal dissonance, or the feeling of disconnection from the present moment, has become a common and dangerous side effect of using social media. With the constant stream of notifications, updates, and comparisons to others' highlight reels, it can be easy to lose touch with the present moment and feel disconnected from our own lives. This causes a gap in time, that scurries away from us so quickly - in a literal blink of an eye.
Social media, contributes to this effect through the "FOMO" (fear of missing out) mentality. We see our friends and acquaintances constantly posting about their exciting experiences and adventures, and we may feel like we are missing out on something if we are not constantly participating or being a patron of similar activities. This can lead to a constant feeling of inadequacy and a desire to constantly keep up with the perceived expectations of our online social circle. We're losing time, trying to actively find time for FOMO.
The constant notifications and alerts from social media disrupts our sense of time. We may feel like we need to constantly check our phones and social media accounts, leading to a fragmented and disconnected experience of the present moment. We're losing out on our most precious resource in the Universe; not wealth, power or recognition; it's Time.
Eventually, temporal dissonance leads to a feeling of disconnection from the present moment. By setting limits and focusing on gratitude, we can mitigate these negative effects and find a healthier balance in our use of social media.
