Silent Architects of India’s Future

Imagine this:

You wake up at 4:30 AM, and start your daily routine, which involves catching a bus, changing to another at a distant stop, & finally walking 2 kilometers to reach your workplace. At work, you need to manage everything as you are the only one responsible.The work requires immense focus and patience. But that’s not all—you’re also tasked with outreach efforts, traveling to nearby locations to convince people to engage with your services, taking feedback, and ensuring their satisfaction.

Your stakeholders come from diverse backgrounds, each with unique needs and challenges, and you must adapt to all of them. Amidst this, you also manage administrative tasks: data entry, analysis, and reporting. And at the end of this exhausting day, you repeat the same arduous journey home, only to tackle household chores and prepare for yet another day.

How many of us could sustain this routine day in and day out?

This is not just a hypothetical scenario. This is the daily reality of countless teachers in remote rural schools across India.

In 2019, when we launched the Changemaker Labs for Schools Program, the goal was simple yet profound: to bridge the learning gap between urban and rural schools through experiential, project-based education. We wanted to empower rural schools with 21st-century changemaking skills and align them with global benchmarks like PISA. Over the years, this initiative has taken me to some of the most remote corners of the country, where I’ve had the privilege of interacting with hundreds of teachers and witnessing their resilience up close.

What strikes me most during these interactions is the sheer grit and determination of these teachers. They travel long distances, often on unpaved roads, to reach their schools. Some work in areas affected by wildlife movement, while others manage single-teacher schools, where one person juggles the roles of educator, administrator, and caretaker. Despite these challenges, their commitment to ensuring their students receive quality education remains unwavering.

In rural settings, where most children are first-generation learners, teachers become much more than educators. They are mentors, guides, and often the sole-support system for children navigating life’s uncertainties. I’ve seen teachers who, despite limited resources and immense workloads, put their students’ well-being above all else. Their efforts are extraordinary, yet their contributions remain largely unsung.

As the son of a government school teacher, I witnessed my mother juggle teaching, administrative tasks, and family responsibilities with incredible grace and dedication. Her strength and selflessness shaped my deep respect for teachers.

It pains me to see how little recognition teachers receive for their work. In India, their roles extend far beyond the classroom. They take on election duties, census work, vaccination drives, and even serve as community leaders during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve heard countless stories of teachers stepping up as pillars of their communities, ensuring education and support continued against all odds.

Yet, they often lack the resources, training, and societal respect they deserve. It’s akin to sending soldiers to the battlefield without weapons or support. How can we expect them to thrive in such conditions?

When we compare our system to world-class ecosystems like Finland, teachers there are regarded as “Architects of the nation”. They are celebrated, respected, and provided with the resources they need to succeed. In stark contrast, many Indian teachers, especially in rural areas, are left to fend for themselves, expected to deliver excellence without adequate support.

India has a rich legacy of education, Once revered as Gurus shaping civilizations, teachers today face declining respect and waning appeal among the youth. This alarming trend calls for urgent action.

Empowering the Torchbearers

The National Education Policy (NEP) offers a framework for change, but real transformation will only happen when we invest in our teachers. They need more than just policies; they need respect, resources, and opportunities for professional growth.

While there have been commendable efforts by the government and organizations to provide teacher training, most of these initiatives focus heavily on subject-specific knowledge or pedagogical techniques, often missing the bigger picture of teacher empowerment.

This gap becomes even more evident in rural settings, where teachers frequently manage multi-grade classrooms, students with varying learning abilities, and significant community responsibilities. At Connecting Dreams Foundation, our focus goes beyond improving classroom instruction. Through our Changemaker Labs, we aim to empower teachers as leaders of change, equipping them not only with practical skills but also the confidence to innovate, inspire, and create lasting impact in their schools and communities.This is not just about academic outcomes; it’s about building a compassionate, resilient, and innovative society.

A Call for Collaboration

Our teachers are our unsung heroes of our nation’s future. They inspire, they guide, and they transform lives every single day. If we want to see a stronger, more compassionate India, we must start by valuing and empowering those who shape the minds of tomorrow.

This is not a task for one individual or organization; it requires a collective effort. I invite policymakers, organizations, and individuals to join this dialogue.
