Most of us have read about or even use mindfulness.?It’s?a?well-documented?proven practice for reducing stress. Why doesn’t everybody do it, then??Well,?most likely there are a few reasons for why not everyone connects with the practice. Personally, it's just not my "style". That’s?why I focus on creating space for silence in your life.?Just plain?silence. No noise?at best or no voices at least.?Research shows that silence has a greater effect on reducing chronic stress than listening to relaxation music.?Ask me for the research or for strategies related to quieting your mind.
The benefits of the sound of silence are known to be lowering?blood pressure, lowering cortisol (stress chemical),?calming racing thoughts, stimulating?creativity, improving?concentration abilities,?improving focus, stimulating brain cell rejuvenation, helping with quality of sleep, and...YES! It allows for the development of mindfulness.?
How much silence do you need in your day in order to reep the rewards???
Five minutes of silence will do you good. Twelve minutes of silence will do you wonders. Two hours of silence will?provide your brain and body with the?optimal?restoration impact.?Seem?impossible?to create?two hours of silence?for yourself? Possibly. You can?probably come?close, though!?Here are some silencing strategies:?
Use your commute to create a “silent” ride (no voices).?No radio or phone interruptions.?
Wake up before others in your household and sit with yourself for five to twelve minutes (coffee in hand, if needed!)?Key:?don’t?bring your phone with you.?

When you shower or take a bath, go noiseless. No interruptions. No rushing.?
Do your cardio or workout without music or other sounds (at least 10 minutes of it).?
Develop a silent bedtime routine. Incorporate 5-12 minutes of silence in your final couple of hours of being awake. Light a?candle but?turn off all noise and voices.?
Creating and safeguarding silent time for your restoration also reduces stress by giving you a healthy control element in your day.?You?don’t?have to stick with an exact time. You only need to stick with giving yourself silence each day. Make?silent time?your “non-negotiable” just as?you?likely?do?with?brushing your teeth (you?won’t?go a day without it).?
As my profile reads, I am on a mission to make brain care as regular as oral hygiene. The only reason we brush our teeth, floss, use mouthwash, and go to the dentist to deal with our teeth well is because it's been a practice conditioned since childhood most likely. Chances are you never tell yourself you don't have time to brush your teeth. Brain care can become as routinized (and as easy on time with my strategies) as teeth care allowing us to protect our physical, mental, and emotional selves.
