Silence

Silence is empowering.

We could gain plenty of energy, time and enhance creativity if we consciously decide to focus on reducing the unnecessary noise pollution that surrounds us. In a way, noise has become part of our busy lives and, more often than not, we could hardly imagine that there could somehow be less of it on an everyday basis.

Apart from the obvious and unnecessary sounds that the ears register, noise equally refers to the invasive, often pointless and energy-sucking distractions that are all around us:

- unsolicited 'advice' or comments from certain acquaintances, especially those who are not in our shoes;

- the quasi-established norm in some workplaces where employees feel the need to 'express' themselves (make noise) in meetings merely to show to hierarchy that they exist and have 'ideas';

- the clingy behaviour of some people in our various networks as a result of an excessive need for attention;

- 'busyness' in the form of over-packed personal agendas for fear of 'emptiness', being alone or confronted with oneself;

- never-ending discussions to reach 'alignment' amongst co-workers in corporations to mask the anxiety of engaging personal responsibility of making a decision;

- binge participation in predictable social media feeds, bordering addiction;

- senseless 'speculation' with peers on the possible difficulty of an academic exam just prior to entering the exam room;

- or merely raising the volume of one's voice when the message could come across with considerably more impact by speaking calmly…

The list of examples may be long.

Letting in too much noise pollution has the potential effect of distracting or blocking us from focusing on taking real, aligned action. It tends to make us more error-prone and decreases our efficiency.

It is in our capacity to filter negative noise and to exit such counter-productive types of artificially established systems. It is up to us to determine the extent we allow them to reach us and influence us in fulfilling the objectives we have established in our professional and personal lives. Filtering requires self-discipline as well as a healthy amount of confidence.

Filtering requires self-discipline as well as a healthy amount of confidence.

Choosing to encourage figurative and literal silence, to savour the moments when we genuinely are with ourselves – to simply be and let go – are clear signs that we are comfortable with ourselves.

Choosing to encourage figurative and literal silence, to savour the moments when we genuinely are with ourselves – to simply be and let go – are clear signs that we are comfortable with ourselves.

And being at ease greatly contributes to putting our mind to the task at hand and, simply put, getting our stuff done.

Of course, we know that the results, due to a conscious approach, greatly contribute to our personal satisfaction and overall happiness.

So true Jarmila. I was learning about silence and solitude just yesterday on a podcast and felt convicted to 'practice' what was being preached'. Great and timely post for me.
