September was a varied month for the Signify Premium Insights – Medical Imaging team, covering both big picture topics as well as specific vendor activity, including acquisitions, a new product release in modalities, and regulatory clearance for an ultrasound AI solution.?
We started the month by diving into the Q2 financial reports for the leading vendors in medical imaging, including GE医疗 , 西门子医疗 , 飞利浦 , Canon Inc. , FUJIFILM Corporation , and Sectra .
While book-to-bill ratios generally remain strong, it is becoming clear that that remarkable growth experienced by many vendors will not be repeated in 2023. Our Insight discusses the challenges in the market, including the ongoing impact of the anti-corruption measures in China, and considers where vendors can turn to sustain growth.
In another financially focused Insight , we consider the ramifications of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ’ 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, which includes a proposed 2.8% cut to the conversion factor used to determine Medicare payment for physician services.
The proposed cut has proven to be controversial, with the MGMA stating that it has “dangerous implications," and RadNet highlighting the move would represent a $6 million to $8 million cut in revenues from its Medicare business in 2025. Given the potential long-term consequences of continued cuts, is it time for a revaluation of the Medicare payment system?
The ongoing workforce shortage in medical imaging is also a concern that has long-term implications for the industry, with the World Health Organization projecting a shortfall of 10 million health workers by 2030.
The SPI Medical Imaging team brought its collective expertise to bear for an Insight taking a broad look at the issue, examining the changing dynamics in relationships between providers and vendors, and the role of modalities and IT in overcoming workforce challenges.
Turning to individual vendor activity, 西门子医疗 recently made a binding offer to acquire the diagnostic arm of 诺华 ’ Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) for above $223M. With this deal, Siemens will acquire Europe’s second largest cyclotron network, used to manufacture radioactive compounds for diagnostics and treatment of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
Our Insight discusses the potential for growth in the molecular imaging market, and how Siemens can defend its leadership position against GE HealthCare and emerging challenger United Imaging Healthcare .
Enlitic has also been active in M&A, agreeing to acquire LAITEK Inc , a medical imaging data migration and routing service provider based in the US and Romania. The acquisition represents a key strategic shift for Enlitic, expanding the scope of its data standardisation offering to include more tangible services.
In our Insight , we discuss the shorter-term impact of the acquisition on Enlitic’s strategy and financial position, as well as its longer-term opportunities in AI and imaging real world data (iRWD), competing with companies such as Flywheel.io , Tempus AI and OneMedNet .
In the first of two ultrasound-related topics, we discuss AISAP ’s FDA clearance for its AI-powered AISAP CARDIO point-of-care ultrasound software platform. The clearance is a significant milestone for AISAP in its planned expansion into the US market.
Our Insight considers the rapid pace with which AISAP achieved this clearance and the vendor’s competitive positioning compared to established players in the market, such as Us2.ai , Ultromics , and iCardio.ai .
MAUI Imaging recently unveiled its ultrasound-based Computed Echo Tomography (CET) K3900 system, claiming that it overcomes some of the key limitations of ultrasound technology. The system certainly appears to be novel, and its credibility is bolstered by its FDA clearance and a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.
In our Insight , we discuss the opportunities for the device and the advantages of its military contract, as well as the challenges for a new company with a relatively unique product.
Finally, Jake Bennett and Manav Patel, co-authors of Signify Research’s Cloud Adoption and Business Model Evolution in Imaging IT report, give their view of the cloud market in 2024.
In an Ask the Analyst Insight , we outline the uptake of the technology in differing regions, the key barriers to adoption, including a lack of consistency and clarity about costs and business models, as well as the potential impact on the competitive environment for IT vendors.
