Signify Premium Insights - Generative AI: Round-Up from January 2024

Written by Alan Stoddart | Editor of Signify Premium Insights – Generative AI.

The use of generative AI in healthcare is accelerating very quickly. This is offering plenty of food for thought for Signify Research’s analysts in the build-up to the launch of its new Generative AI Premium Insights service – a complimentary one-month trial of which is available via the button below.

Despite this breakneck pace of change, however, there are several trends that will take some time to play out. Five of these were captured in the first Insight of the year , which identified the currents Signify Research expects to define the year ahead. These range from expectations about which kind of solutions are expected to have the most significant impact in the near term, why that is the case and how vendors can capitalise, to some of the more significant barriers that will stymie the technology’s use.

Another topic which became the focus of a Premium Insight was athenahealth ’s addition of generative AI tools to its athenaOne platform. The addition of patient record sharing summarisation, identification of missing prior authorisation and care plan summarisation all represent sensible use cases for the vendor to focus on, and make sense give then vendor's pedigree. The Premium Insight questions how beneficial these tools will be to customers, as well as how beneficial they will be to athenahealth.

Another of the month’s Premium Insights addressed one of the questions at the forefront of the mind of many considering the generative AI; the debate between proprietary and open source foundation models. These questions were pertinent for French vendor Nabla , which has recently raised $24m in Series B funding, and is transitioning from a proprietary model from OpenAI to open source alternatives such as those from the likes of Meta and Mistral AI . The Premium Insight focusing on this transition explains the rationale for such a move, as well as highlighting some of the trade-offs being made and the challenges the vendor might face in achieving commercial success.
