Signifier matters

Long story short

I've been filling up my car with fuel recently. When the person asked whether I wanted petrol or diesel, I said diesel.

While filling up, I wondered how they distinguish between petrol and diesel pumps. So I asked the person how they recognized it, and the answer was simple:

It's written diesel and petrol on pumps to make it simple if it's green, it's petrol, and if it's blue, it's diesel (Signifier).

Let me put it this way: what if you borrowed a car from someone and forgot to ask whether it was petrol or diesel when you came to fill the tank? And you have no idea whether it's petrol or diesel.

In that case, the individual recognizes the color and fills the car.

So Why can’t this be used in fuel lids?

While opening the lid What if the lid is colored? So that the person easily recognizes the type of car.

So that each time the user doesn’t have to recall the type of car.
