Every year, Makar Sankranti is celebrated on the 14th of January but this year has been one of the exceptions as Makar Sankranti falls on the 15th of January and not 14th. Sun entered into the sign of Capricorn at 2:45 am on the 15th of January and hence, Makar Sankranti falls on the 15th of January. As per Hindu Calendar, Tithi begins from the Sun rise and since the Sun entered the sign of Capricorn at 2:45 AM, it was still the 15th of January as per Hindu Calendar (it was 16th January as per Western Calendar). Why is Makar Sakranti given so much of importance? Well, there are different reasons which streak Makar Sankranti as an important day and which are:
Astrology
- Makar Sankranti is celebrated on the day when the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn (Makar Rashi).
- Capricorn is the original 10th house in a horoscope and is ruled by Sun’s arch rival Saturn. The irony is, Sun is considered to be the strongest in the sign of Capricorn and in the 10th house and here it gets its directional strength.
- Capricorn is an earthy sign denoting stability and Sun is all about stability.
- As per house description, 10th house represents KARMA and is considered to be Karm Sthan. Sun represents the soul and is the guiding light for the soul to perform it’s Karma/duties.
The Importance of Makar Sankranti
- Sankranti is deemed a Deity who killed a demon named Sankarasur.
- Makar Sankranti is the date from which Northward movement of the Sun begins. The period from Karka Sankranti (When the Sun enters the sign of Cancer) to Makar Sankranti is known as Dakshinayan. Time from Makar Sankranti to Karak Sankranti is known as Uttarayan.
- Before Makar Sankranti, the Sun is in the Southern Hemisphere and that's why winter nights in India are longer. But from Makar Sankranti, the Sun starts its journey towards Northern Hemisphere and making the days longer.
- Across India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated by different names and on this day, people express their gratitude to the Sun god.
The Karmic Connection
- Since Capricorn (Makar) is the original 10 house of the horoscope and is also the Karm Sthan, it signifies the Karma of an individual. Right opposite of the 10th house is the 4th house, which is the house of comforts, happiness and represents the mother. One’s Karma or action directly reflects on the 4th house and it’s matters.
- If the Karma is righteous, one reaps the fruits and enjoys a comfortable & blissful life at home.
- That's the reason in Hinduism, Makar Sankranti is deemed as the day of harvest. When Sun enters into the sign of Capricorn whose ruler is Saturn - the planet of Justice, it’s about performing and reaping the fruits of our Karma.
- What ever has been sown in the entire year, this is the time when one should be ready to harvest or collectively reap the fruits of the Karmic actions.
- Sun is the fire and when it blends with the coldness of Saturn, it’s all about working out the balance. Balance is the most important constituent for sustainability & if one masters the ability of balancing, nothing can shatter that individual.
Importance of 2020, Sun & Saturn?
- After a span of almost 28 years, Sun and Saturn will be together in the sign of Capricorn. Both of them love this sign and where it is Saturn’s home, Sun feels the most powerful and well positioned in this sign and in the 10th house.
- Sun is all about individuality and Saturn is all about the masses. This combination is about working for the masses & empowering others. This is the sign where one becomes empowered by empowering others and sharing with others.
- Most of us will witness varied changes happening in our lives, depending upon a few other important factors distinctive to our individuality.
Wishing you a happy and prosperous Makar Sankranti.
