The Significance of International Day of the Girl Child
Centuries ago, women and girls across the world formed part of marginalised groups. They were left out of major parts of society, often relegated to the back of the room and to doing domestic chores. Education was not a part of their lot, much less a say in the affairs of the economy of whichever state they were in. A woman in leadership was unheard of and close to sacrilegious, except in some cases such as the Kingdom of? Dahomey, who can be traced to modern day Benin in West Africa. They formed part of their Kingdom’s leadership and constituted of warriors, highly revered by the King and by all.
Over the years, changes have occurred, with women having equal rights and access as their male counterparts. Thus, they occupy leadership roles, partake in elections and are capable of many other things. Yet, some kinds of discrimination in one form or the other still exist today against women and girls. It was in light of this that on December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution and declared October 11th as International Day of the Girl Child; to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world. It focuses on the need to address the challenges girls face, promote empowerment and to aid in the fulfillment of their human rights. This international observance also acknowledges that emphasis laid on the girl child is critical in their formative years and propels them into becoming capable women.
The theme for the International Day of the Girl child 2023 was “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our leadership, Our well-being.” The goal was to create a strategic moment that centres and celebrates girls’ voices while urging those in positions and places of authority to improve their financial support for girls’ rights. This celebration coincided with our AfriGirl Conference. With the sub theme of The Power that Lies Within, the event gathered almost 1000 girls from across Ghana. It consisted of Senior High School Students, University students and women from all walks of life, professions and religion.
“The goal was for all the young ladies to understand that we all have power in ourselves. Believe in yourself. BE YOU!”
The words of Dr Khadija Owusu, Founder of AKAYA. This was achieved through the words of the many distinguished speakers who graced the event, the activities and breakout sessions designed for practical experiences.

This year’s theme is “Girls’ Vision For The Future,” as declared by the United Nations. Girls worldwide are affected by global climate issues, poverty, conflict and in some areas pushback against gains for Human Rights and Gender Equality. Thus, many girls are still denied their basic rights, have their choices restricted and face other shortcomings. Yet, as per the United Nations, rather than being broken as a result of the challenges, many of the girls, in the face of the numerous constraints they face remain courageous and hopeful for the future.
Picture this, girls in deteriorating classrooms in a rural part of Ghana, at the brunt of the harsh elements of the weather yet determined to go to school. Young girls, plagued by different challenges including abuse, rejection, suicidal thoughts and a host of others thus, affecting their mental health and ultimately affecting their will to live. Yet, are able to against all odds, voice out and receive the help they need so as to secure a brighter future. That certainly speaks of hope!
These are realities we see at AKAYA and encounter through our work in Ghana and through the diverse programs that we offer, are able to help girls have a better vision for their future.
At AKAYA, we continue to believe that the girls of today are the leaders of tomorrow and we will continue to work tirelessly, all year round to ensure that no girl’s vision for a better tomorrow dies.
