Significance of High-Rise Structures in a City
As cities continue to grow, the way we construct and manage buildings has become more critical to global economic and social development. The increasing urbanization has made an upturn in the construction of high-rise and tall buildings worldwide. The key economic driver of the construction of high-rise structures is the densely occupied urban spaces.? According to statistics, nearly one million people move to cities in a week. Tall buildings are the viable solution to meet the demands of the rising population and consequently the land scarcity. As the demand for high-rise buildings flourished, the competition for constructing the highest building itself became the driving force.
The construction of high-rise buildings in various sectors such as housing and offices allows a city to expand without the infringement of the green spaces and promotes the inclusion of green spaces in buildings themselves. Hence, tall buildings are designed as mixed-use structures which include offices, housing, fitness, and even public amenities. These “mini-cities” also create a sense of community among the people in the cities. Building a community on a small piece of land is cost-efficient and energy-efficient as it reduces travel.
The presence of high-rise buildings in an urban environment becomes the dominant physical character of a city. Though high-rise buildings have begun to look alike, tall buildings with culturally distinct forms contribute to placemaking and identity. The skylines become the urban signatures of the cities and the determination of identity to a city.? Further, Urban living conditions are largely related to social services, such as public health, security, education, and recreation. Therefore, while designing high-rise structures, these services have to be taken into consideration. When these standards are accounted for in the design process, urban life can be dramatically improved.
