The Significance of Deepavali to Me

As Deepavali approaches, I wanted to express why this festival holds special meaning for me, and in doing so, I wanted to share its significance with you. This would be a 3-part article because there is so much I want to share. I hope this brings joy, as it is the true meaning of Deepawali.?

Deepavali symbolizes the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The lights of Diwali signify a time to destroy all our dark desires and thoughts, eradicate dark shadows and evils, and give us the strength and the zeal to carry on with our goodwill for the rest of the year. ????????????????????????????????????????

Deepavali is a Sanskrit word, "deepawali,” which means “row of lights," with “deep” meaning light and “avali” translated to mean a row. Across the many communities that observe Diwali, it is known as a festival of lights. ?

What is the origin of this festive?

There are many different origin stories for Deepawali. The origin story may differ depending on which part of India you are from or the work you are doing.

Let me chalk down a few. ?

From the north of India, it is the homecoming of Lord Rama to Ayodhya and his victory over the demon Ravana. According to the Ramayana, people commemorate the return journey of Rama and Sita from Lanka to north India by lighting diyas, which are small oil candles, and clay lamps to welcome them home.

From Western India, it is in the legend of King Bali. An ambitious and powerful demon, King Bali posed a threat to the gods, the heavens, and the earth. Until, disguised as a Brahmin dwarf, Lord Vishnu banished the evil king to the underworld.

In both regions, traditions include pujas to Godness Lakshmi for prosperity and abundance. Invoking godness Lakshmi and bringing good luck and fortune to the household, people clean and decorate their houses with lamps during this period.

Meanwhile, in south India, Deepawali is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi. Sometimes known as “Choti Diwali,” Naraka Chaturdashi too celebrates the banishment of evil and darkness from the earth.?

In the south, it is believed Deepavali commemorates the triumph of Lord Krishna—the 8th incarnation of Vishnu—over the demon King Narakasura, a powerful giant who abducted 16,000 daughters of the gods.?

Lord Krishna vanquished the malevolent ruler of Pragjyotishapura (in the vicinity of modern-day Assam) and liberated the girls. Upon his return, people bathed Krishna in scented oils early in the morning. Hence, taking an early bath with essential oils remains a Deepavali tradition.?

These are a few tales of which I am aware. I am sure there are many other Sanatanis who might have a different story. However, the moral of most stories remains the same: good triumphs over evil.

As a child, my favorite holiday was Deepawali, and I would eagerly wait for it every year. Deepawali for me starts with vibrant hues of marigold flowers, and as the flickering lights of diyas fill the air, a palpable sense of joy dances through my heart. Delicious sweets and colourful fireworks mark this occasion. Every year, this festival reminds me not only of its cultural significance but also of how it shapes my identity and beliefs.

Family Bonds: Strengthening Relationships during Celebrations

Deepawali serves as a profound reminder of the strength and warmth found in family bonds. As families gather to participate in age-old traditions—such as cleaning and decorating homes, preparing festive meals, or sharing stories from generations past—a unique synergy emerges. This shared experience not only rekindles connections but also creates new memories that transcend time. Each ritual acts as a thread weaving together the diverse narratives within a family fabric, reinforcing unity and encouraging open dialogues among members.

Moreover, this holiday fosters a spirit of gratitude that can deepen interpersonal relationships. Gathering around the dinner table for festive feasts, amidst digital distractions, reminds us to set aside our devices and embrace quality conversations. Families can initiate discussions about aspirations for the coming year or reflect on personal growth through adversity. Such sincere exchanges nurture empathy and understanding, enabling family members to support one another meaningfully. By illuminating our lives with love and appreciation during this celebration, we create an enduring legacy of togetherness that will illuminate even the darkest times ahead.
