Information and inspiration are important as it helps motivate us, it gives us insights for making decisions, and more. In the process of informing and inspiring others, we need to be careful to make sure we're communicating accurately.
While I'm nowhere near an expert in writing, I do want to share a friendly reminder for all of us and especially authors based on my observations of content shared here.?
Authors: This is a simple reminder to cite your sources in the articles you write and share here or anywhere.
I share this reminder as I see several people, (who have large networks here), that continually share something in their post as if they wrote or experienced it themselves, only to find out later that it was authored or experienced by someone else.
You should not be representing someone else's work as your own.
Based on my recollection of my writing classes of yesteryear, if you do want to incorporate someone else's work, here are some ideas: 1. You can simply use a foot note stating the source. 2. You can include a note in the body of the post stating who wrote it. 3. You can note that it's adapted from as specific author's work. 4. Or, if you truly don't know the source, note "Unknown" to give indication that it's someone else's work and you don't know the author.
These basic ideas and more work well and give credit where credit it due.
I also share this because your reputation is important.
In my view, the people who connect with you expect honesty and integrity as you inspire and inform them which is why giving credit where credit is due is critical in what you communicate.
The choice is yours and I hope you take the basic steps to more accurately represent other's work as well as your own.
Here's to continuing to accurately share information and inspiration as we aim to help set each other up for success!
All the best and much success,
Randolph Koch
