SIFIR's 2018 Conference - Use of Force
Steve Hirjak
Retired Assistant Chief of Police for Top 20 US City. Working to help public safety professionals get the most out of their hard-earned retirements.
The Society for Integrity in Force Investigation and Reporting (SIFIR, pronounced "cypher") had an exciting 2017. We held two conferences serving well almost 60 police agencies from across the US, Canada, and Australia. We're excited to announce our 2018 conference and annual meeting.
SIFIR is completely non-profit (501(c)3 registered with the IRS) and none of our board members are paid in order to maintain the integrity of what we do. We are run by police professionals to serve other police professionals by providing training that we can apply to our use of force investigations, network, and learn from each others' experiences.
This year, we have a great lineup for September 5, 6, & 7 in Henderson, NV, just 19 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
The Las Vegas Metro Police CIRT will present the Mandalay Bay Mass Shooting Debrief
We all felt the fallout from Betty Shelby's OIS of Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, OK:
Her attorney, Scott Wood, will present his defense of the criminal charges against then-Officer Shelby. Sgt. David Walker of Tulsa PD Homicide will present his investigation of Officer Shelby, presented during her trial. This is a rare debrief of an OIS where the officer was criminally charged for the shooting and went to a full trial, all while watched across the national news.
Rick Wyant, WD Forensics
Rick has extensive experience doing forensic work in a state crime lab involving several officer involved shootings. He also works with hardware manufacturers from weapons to laser scanners. Rick will present on bullet trajectory as well as on laser and aerial crime scene mapping.
Eugene Ramirez, Nationally Known Tactical Officer Attorney
Mr. Ramirez has litigated some high profile police shootings and is the current chair of the National Tactical Officers Association legal section. He will present on OIS interviews in which the investigator didn't ask the right questions and when the officer didn't supply the right information, resulting in terrible consequences.
On top of the opportunity to network with investigators from across the country, there are also other presentations and we are hosting the training in the hotel this year with Las Vegas' best breakfast buffet (as rated by the Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper) included daily. We also have group discounts for agencies and discounts for previous attendees. I hope to see you there! Registration open at www.forceinvestigation.org
