The latest monthly PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) for the UK manufacturing sector reveals some glimmers of hope, with the index hitting its highest level for seven months. The key indicator rose to 49.3 in February – up from 47 in January – and almost reached the critical 50 mark, above which the sector would be expanding. Production rose for the first time in eight months, albeit slightly, and sentiment was at its highest level for a year, with 60% of manufacturers predicting that their output will rise in the coming year. On the other hand, new work fell for the ninth month running. It’s probably too early to say that the worst is definitely over, but the signs are looking hopeful.

?Ushering in the next evolution of electric actuators, the new Thomson Electrak? XD is strong enough to take on hydraulic applications. Design engineers now benefit from electromechanical linear actuators with a new level of load-handling capability, tackling loads up to 25,000 N, speeds up to 75 mm/s, duty cycle up to 100%, strokes up to 1200 mm. On top, the XD offers extensive protection against even the harshest conditions and ingress and features enhanced controllability and diagnostics via onboard controls such as low-level switching, programmable end-of-stroke limit switches, position feedback, synchronization, CAN bus systems and more.
Machine designers who are looking to eliminate messy, space-consuming hydraulic systems, while also adding high controllability, can now do so for an expanded set of material handling and factory automation applications.

?The PTV terminal block series with side conductor connection is a new Phoenix Contact innovation. This ensures clearer wiring without bending radii in confined spaces.
The conductor and connection marking is more recognisable.
This Phoenix Contact series features feed-through, three-conductor and four-conductor terminal blocks. Testing and bridging options are available on each terminal block. Furthermore, disconnect and knife disconnect terminal blocks are also available. All terminal blocks are available up to a cross section of 4 mm2. Thanks to the tool-free Push-in direct connection technology, the PTV terminal blocks enable time-saving conductor connection. The connection principle and conductor routing are self-explanatory. Logistics costs can be reduced through the use of the standard accessories of the CLIPLINE complete terminal block system.

?The SCHURTER CHS is a capacitive hidden switch that can be mounted behind non-conductive materials, allowing for an invisible switch installation. This innovative technology allows for the design of user interfaces that meet specific application requirements. Capacitive switches use an electric field on the user surface of the sensor to trigger the switching process, even if a non-conductive material is between the sensor and the finger. This makes it ideal for use in highly sensitive environments such as medical technology and the food industry, as there are no holes or slots that can harbor bacteria. The SCHURTER CHS is sensitive to touch and can be adjusted to customer requirements. It is available in three different variants.
