The Side Effects of Being a Negative Recruiter

I hate to be negative, but we gotta talk about it because you cannot be negative, especially as a recruiter! I’ve seen tons of recruiters get into a slump, it happens to everybody, it’s even happened to me. It’s called “fat-cat syndrome”, and you have to learn how to get yourself out of that recruiting slump, asap.?

The side effects of being negative can be awful for your health, that’s a whole other conversation. Though, being a negative recruiter can affect your entire game.?

We all know that talking about bias as a recruiter is a huge no-no. Everybody has an unconscious bias, but if you are a negative recruiter, it can become a conscious bias. This allows you to develop a negative bias. This conditions you to focus on the bad experiences and the bad outcomes. Leaning into the negative bias can affect how you look at situations, clients, and potential matches.??

Every person and every experience need to be fresh and allowed a fair chance, before being put into a bucket. Putting people in buckets doesn't give them a chance to be new and change, let alone, be able to prove anything of their value and worth.?

While being a recruiter, you gotta put that smile on your face and forget what’s happened. Shake it off and try to work through it the best you can, to keep being that great recruiter and help set all of your candidates up for success, instead of failure.?

Negative emotions are 3Xs more powerful than positive emotions. So get that negative crap out of here, we can't allow room for this shit. A negative reaction or a negative message is a big fart bomb! Don't be a stinky cheese because you had a bad experience, or your response rate is down right now.?

Tips For the Fix

One easy way to change your whole attitude, which I tell my recruiters to do, is to stand and smile when you are sending InMails and making those calls. I promise it makes a difference in how you sound on the receiving end. Fake it til you make it if you have to.?

In Summary?

In gist, don't be the negative recruiter. I guarantee that your response rate and closing rates will fail if you do it that way. There are so many reasons why you should always try to be a positive recruiter, and keep those biases’ focused on the good stuff.?
