Sick and Tired - The UnUsual Maze of Air Travel ????

#ThorsDayInsights 23

A recent journey from Saigon to Kuala Lumpur was a stark reminder of the unpredictability of modern air travel. What seemed like a smooth journey quickly became a series of challenges that exhausted me. Here's how it unfolded:

The Calm Before the Storm

I arrived at the airport two and a half hours before my flight, expecting smooth sailing with no check-in queues in sight. Everything seemed perfect—until I found out my flight was delayed by an hour. ??

Moving on to immigration, I was met with an unbelievably long queue stretching out of the airport. Thankfully, my temporary residence card granted me access to the e-gate, sparing me from an exhausting wait.

Technology Saves the Day… Almost

After breezing through security, I thought I was in the clear—until I arrived in Kuala Lumpur and encountered a new requirement: the e-arrival card. Ideally, this should be completed online up to three days in advance, but neither the airline nor my travel agent informed me. Thanks to data roaming, I managed to scan the QR code and begin the process, unlike many others stuck without access. Unfortunately, auto-fill errors on my phone led to a frustrating experience, forcing me to redo the process and endure another long queue. ??

The Final Hurdle

Despite the challenges, I finally cleared immigration after some manual intervention by the officers. This made me wonder—why can't frequent flyers, whose details are stored by airlines, have an integrated system with these e-arrival cards? It would make the entire process smoother and less stressful.

The Inevitable Lag

After reaching the hotel close to midnight, I realised the next morning that I had miscalculated the time difference. My calendar showed a 9 AM meeting, but in Malaysia, that meant 10 AM—so, for the first time, I arrived an hour early to a meeting! ??

Thanks for sharing this travel adventure! It’s a great reminder of how even the most seasoned travelers can get caught off guard by unexpected hurdles. The point about an integrated system for frequent flyers is spot on - it's surprising that with all our tech advancements, these simple efficiencies aren't yet standard.
