SICILIAN AIRPORTS – HOW TO MOVE AT BEST

SICILIAN AIRPORTS – HOW TO MOVE AT BEST

You are probably wondering which airport to choose and how to move once you have reached Sicily: here you go, a focus on the Sicilian airports.

Maybe what you heard about the most is the Airport of Catania, namely Fontanarossa (CTA) located in the eastern part of the island, which is truly the one with more people travelling through it. To know which airlines operate in Fontanarossa, go check here where you are able to find all of them.

As second in traffic, Palermo, Punta Raisi (PMO) is instead found in the western part of Sicily, and depending on your destination, could even be more convenient. To know also which airlines operate in Punta Raisi, go visit here for international flights and also here for domestic flights.

Important :

Just be please aware of the interruption of the highway A19 Palermo-Catania, which, if coming from Catania direction Palermo, makes you take the exit Polizzi Generoso, go up through the town, and then go down to re-enter the highway through the exit-direction Scillato. On the way back it’s the same, and it takes about 40 minutes.

Going back to the airports’ description, Trapani’s Birgi airport (TPS) is the third one which operates in the island, and it is located in the north-western part of the island. Companies which operate in this airport are at the following link. It is a very small airport but no worries, it is about one hour bus to Palermo itself and if you arrive there my advice is to spend some time visiting the area, very beautiful as well (think about San Vito Lo Capo, for example).

Comiso’s Aereoporto degli Iblei (CIY) is also small but located in the south-eastern part, so it is very close to Catania. It was previously a military base and it re-opened as a civil airport in 2013. The operating airlines companies are the same of Trapani’s airport, as you surely noticed are very few especially if compared to Catania or Palermo.

In general, when you arrive in one of these airports, buses will be there in order to reach different destinations. Some names you might want to write down are Sais bus lines, or Etna bus lines, the main ones. But they do not cover night trips if you arrive after 9 pm, for example. In any case a road trip is namely by car, and for sure once you land you are able to find many ‘rent a car’ points, where you can choose models and also compare prices. For your convenience also check out www.autoeurope.com , even if you are only 18 years old, there are no issues in renting your car. We will not need to do that since we will use my own car, but if you don’t have a local friend ready to pick you up, you surely have options to drive on your own.

Also trains are there, called “Regionale Veloce”. You are able to book earlier online and they go from Palermo to Catania, or vice versa, stopping in Enna and Caltanissetta, and the cost is around 15 euros. You might want to ride that and then rent a car. Up to you.

Moreover you might consider to land in one of the minor islands’ airports surrounding Sicily: you are able to either reach Lampedusa (LMP) orPantelleria (PNL), but then you would have to take a boat to go to Sicily, probably after enjoying beaches there.

This is some broad but useful information we did want to share with you, but of course ask us for more details, before arriving to Sicily!

We are here for you, and hold on for our next post. More news and curiosities coming up!
