In a pool of hundreds of applicants cutting across all the registered political parties from Kenya and Zambia, for the third cohort of the Political Party Leadership Institute (PPLI), 36 youth of equal gender were selected. This is a one year program by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) that involves virtual and in-person training sessions aimed at building skills in leadership, governance, and availing networking and peer learning opportunities. During this year’s program (July, 2023 - July, 2024), delegates were required to self-initiate projects which they would then implement in their communities. The initiatives centered around thematic areas affecting our nation such as inclusion of marginalized groups, climate change, peace building and service delivery were presented before a panel of judges and in the presence of SGs & EDs of parties and various stakeholders who were invited to secure their support. Interesting how I was the only participant cum guest since I’m a party ED.
A day to the lightning talks, a colleague saw me engage senior Chiggai and asked whether or not, due to her position in the government, she would be in the panel. The info wasn’t privy however, what I was certain of was that as we’d been earlier informed, to qualify to assess and award, a judge ought to have extensive knowledge/experience in one of the thematic areas hence, these are people whom we’ve shared spaces with. That was indeed the position. Whether or not it influences the award/outcome, there’s visibility and influence in constantly showing up since you never know when opportunities to cement what you already built come in handy. The pleasant and solid panel was affirming and kind to the participants; that the world is yet to see the powerhouse we are.
After the presentations, another colleague whispered to me ‘you’re leading in my Zambia list’. I laughed it off and asked him whether or not he wouldn’t want to go himself. He stated he already secured his slot so I should fight for mine. His confidence laced with humour poses work if you happen to speak after him in an event. Anyway, the point before I digress; know your strategy to your end game then work at it. Because he sure made it to this list, which comprised of 8 ladies & 4 gentlemen whose projects stood out by demonstrating innovation, the ability to be scaled up, sustainability and genuine alignment with political party objectives and community.
Our initiatives were also eligible for seed funding from NDI. And by now you’ve noticed the list of 12 had women being majority. This is evidence that young women are not only in political parties, they are not only actively engaging within political parties but they are also thriving well in political parties. It should translate in our elective, nominative & appointive political outcomes. Honored that along the way, esteemed organizations graciously agreed to collaborate by volunteering their time and expertise in my journey. Thankful for such platforms that enable me tailor thoughts to frame a local conversation for a global audience. And to ready myself since I’m done closing my eyes in whispers and wishes. To get dressed, pack my bags, and be ready. The things I deserve, the successes I've been working on, the opportunities I've been wishing for will all come. By the time they come, be ready.

Next time my feet will touch this soil, it will be in Livingstone to bungee jump which is one of my unticked activities in my bucket list that’s partitioned into 6 categories: Self improvement, Service to others, Financial goals, People to meet, Places to visit & Events to experience. And of course to walk alongside Africa's big cats (that’s if the lions & cheetahs are not tortured like some elephants into accommodating humans). That, will be my summit, for no one returns from summits unchanged.
