SIA CP Specification - Jan 2020

So, fairly hot of the press, sees the 'Specification for Learning and Qualifications for Protective Service Operatives'.

Having had a look through this I can identify several flaws and issues with the entire approach. The individuals involved had the opportunity to increase standards in one of the areas where the SIA had drastically failed to in 2006.

The SIA have zero experience in Close Protection, deliver a comical result of epic proportion.

We still have nil pre-course requirement in terms of medical fitness, physical fitness and even a driving license.

Now termed as 'Protective Services' we see finally an introduction to what they term 'Physical Skills in Protective Services', the focus of which clearly fails in its focus on 'non-aggressive methods' and to which the list of core competencies should be within the 'Section 12 Conflict Management'.

Terminology regarding 'Section 4 - Detection of Surveillance' is incorrect. Applications it is not but operational Tactics, Techniques and Procedure (TTP's).

This document proves yet again that all of the points I had made in my book that was published some 6 years ago and 6 years after the implementation of SIA licensing the CP sector in 2006 - that the SIA simply do not have one clue on the imposition of standards within the Close Protection sector of this industry.

Their approach to 'Consultation with Industry Stakeholders' is flawed from the outset due to the lack of training and experience of those consulted. Their oversight during the decision making process is flawed due to their own lack of knowledge in this sector.

The result? A continued ineptness to the delivery of Close Protection and Protective Security in its entirety.

Fitness surely has to be part of the process. If that bars certain people being awarded the qualification and licencing then so be it. If the SIA really want standards to rise they need to be speaking to proven industry leading experts and training providers.
