Sh*t You Should Know (Issue 8) iOS 18, Excel World Championship, and Blinged-out Pokémon

Stuck at the water cooler with nothing to talk about? We got you. Welcome to the Sh*t You Should Know newsletter, a fortnightly newsletter that highlights some of the hottest topics you should probably know about.

iOS 18 finally gets features we’ve been asking for, for years

WWDC has been underway this week and unsurprisingly 苹果 has unveiled the next updates to its iOS operating system. The update is set to come with several major changes, including the ability to customise the appearance of app icons and the control centre, something Apple users have been looking forward to, for a long time.

Oh and we haven’t even mentioned that the new update will potentially kill off apps like 1password and Notion... iOS 18 is currently in developer beta, with a public release expected to roll out in September.

Excel isn’t just a useful business tool, it’s a sport, too!

Picture this, you’ve spent the day slogging through endless spreadsheets on Excel, budgets, financial reports, database management, and lord-knows what else, so what better way to unwind than tuning into the Excel World Championship that’s taking place in Las Vegas right now.?

That’s right, people are actively competing in a series of spreadsheet-related challenges to be crowned the Excel World Champion. We’re not sure what’s more compelling, this, or the Relume Design League .

For the Pokémon fan who has everything: A bejewelled Pikachu

If you’re bored of walking around with your PSA 10 Base Holo Charizard dangling around your neck then never fear, King Ice has you covered with its upcoming range of bejewelled Pokémon jewellery.

Launching on June 14, you’ll be able to grab your own blinged-out piece, though at the time of writing the only piece being teased is a bejewelled Pikachu completed with a Pokéball on its head.

Spotify is in hot water with the National Music Publishers Association… again

Spotify is once again in hot water with the NMPA, this time the organization has filed an official complaint against Spotify with the Federal Trade Commission for “unlawful conduct” that’s harming consumers.

The main focus of the complaint comes from Spotify’s decision to convert its subscriptions that include music and audiobooks into “bundles” that, it's being claimed, is an attempt to pay reduced royalties to rightsholders over the assertion users are paying for something more than music.

It’s a good thing that the cost of creating content is “close to zero” , eh Daniel?

Stuart Semple launches crowdfunding for dumb phone

Stuart Semple, the artist most commonly known for creating the Blackest Black paint that could be sold to anyone other than Anish Kapoor, the creator of Vantablack, is now taking on the tech industry with a “dumb phone for smart people”.

In an attempt to address the mental health epidemic that Semple believes smartphones have attributed to, he’s launched BURNR, a stylish alternative to the boring dumbphones available on the market today aimed at teens, offering a way for them to switch off for a minute. What makes this even cooler, every BURNR sold means a donation to STEM 4 teen mental health charity.

It’s a valiant effort, and we think it looks pretty cool too, but are teens open to switching off?

Bitstamp was acquired by Robinhood, a good move for crypto?

Big news in the crypto world comes from Robinhood ’s $200 million acquisition of one of the oldest crypto exchanges, Bitstamp . Does this mean they’ll be taking from the rich to give to the poor? Don’t be silly.?

What this actually means is Robinhood takes a huge step forward in the crypto market and will aid its expansion outside of the US, where it’s dealing with a few regulatory hurdles. It also gets them skin in the institutional game which they didn’t have previously so ultimately this is a massive opportunity for them.

Let’s see what the future holds!
